I just finished making a high quality backup of Two Towers. Before I burn it to DVD I would prefer to simply use the AC3 for audio rather than encode it to an MP3 so I could keep the 5.1 surround.
My problem: What kind of player can I use that will be able to decode the 5.1 surround?? So far I've tried it on Windows Media player, Winamp, and PowerDVD. Windows Media player plays fine but doesn't support 5.1 sound. Winamp can play the video but not an AC3. PowerDVD while supporting 5.1 sound can't play the video file and crashes everytime. :(
The movie was made using GKnot .27 with DivX 5.02. Anyone have any suggestions for a player???

You need an AC3 filter to playback the AC3 sound. Try this one http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/

With this filter any media player will be able to play the ac3.

I've already got AC3 filter. Playing an AC3 is not the problem. Problem is being able to play the AVI with AC3 audio on something that supports 5.1 surround.
Anyone have any ideas?

I use spdif out to my DTS/AC3 reciver. Since Media PLayer cant handle spdif out i use PowerDivx and set it to spdif out. The funny thing is that after i've installed PowerDivx and set it to spdif out i can use Media Player to playback movies using spdif! Is their away to get media player work with spdif without installing PowerDivx?

perhaps a stupid question : what happens after you de-installed the PowerDivx. Is mediaplayer still capable of playing through SPDif ??

Hehe. haven't tried that :)
but this is also a legal matter, i'm going to sell multimedia/HT PC's. And I include an OEM version of XP Home, wich inlcudes Media Player. I dont want to spend money on a PowerDivx licence, since it's going to effect the end price of the product.

AC3Filter (http://ac3filter.sf.net) is free. DTS I don't think you can playback with any free filters ATM. It shouldn't really have much to do with the media player itself.
