View Full Version : DVD Shrink - Missing Audio in Extras
Kompressor

Hello everyone,
The title I am trying to perform a complete backup is The Evil Dead Special Edition, published by Elite Entertainment, using DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5.
The DVD structure consists of the main movie and extras. DVD Shrink displays 4 audio tracks for the main movie: 2 dialog tracks and 2 director's commentaries.
Here comes the problem I would like to solve - While the the audio of the main movie plays fine (for all 4 audio tracks), the extras (1 trailer + 1 contiunous outtakes recording) have no audio.
The title was ripped using SmartRipper 2.41, with a full file mode rip. The ripped title played perfectly from my hard drive using PowerDVD in DVD mode.
I've tried a no compression (full) backup in attempt to isolate the problem, but even this supposedly 1:1 copy (not re-authored) when played on both my software or standalone player, would have the same flaw with the Extras - having no audio track.
Since I am relatively new to DVD Shrink, I'm hoping this is a simple error on my part, something that can easily be fixed (for the menus of this title is really worth keeping IMO).
I'll appreciate any feedbacks, thanks in advance :)

are you removing any audio tracks?
it doesn't look like you are from what you say, but can you just confirm this

Hi MackemX!
In the beginning I've backed up without the DD2.0 track, but on my subsequent tries I made sure all audio boxes are checked, but still I got no sound for the trailer and the outtakes extras.
I am indeed from New Zealand, Auckland precisely. I thought Kompressor sounds fancier than Compressor, that's all ;-)
Where is MackemLand??

are the extras in separate titlesets or in the same as the movie?
have you played just the DVDShrink extras VOB's and do the extras have sound if they are separate?
check the IFO's produced by DVDShrink, does they refer to the 2.0 track?
p.s. MackemLand is near GeordieLand :spit: in the North of England

Greetings MackemX,
That was very quick! Thanks for following up :-)
I tried playing the VOB'S of the extras (Trailer VOB distinct from Outtakes VOB), and they both played with sound.
I opened the corresponding IFO's with IFOedit, I see that while the main movie IFO corresponds to 1x 2.0, 1x 5.0, and 2x 1.0 (commentary) tracks, the Extras' IFOs each correspond to only one 1.0 track.
Should the next step be to find out if the referred 1.0 track from the extra is the same with one of the director's commentaries? I'm puzzled why Shrink did not display the audio tracks of those extras.. (I've tried unchecking "display audio/subtitle tracks only of significant size).

is everything in the same titleset?

Sorry I missed the titleset bit.
I believe they are in different title sets, according to DVDShrink.
Main Movie - Title set 1
Trailer - Title set 3
Outtakes - Title set 5
I was going to post the output from IFOedit... Would it help?

are you saying you cannot see the audio when you load the ripped files into DVDShrink?
have you tried the original DVD and using DVDShrink directly on the DVD, does that still show no audio?
I'm lost now seeing as you say DVDShrink cannot see the audio

DVD Shrink does NOT show in Titlesets but in Titles.
I was going to post the output from IFOedit... Would it help?Yes. Can you just post your VIDEO_TS.IFO / VMG Overview page for now? I want to know what Titleset(s) these Titles really reside in.

Thanks for the correction. Yes those I quoted were only the titles as shown by DVDShrink but not the title sets themselves... Title sets are shown in my next post.
@MackemX
Yup that's exactly it, no audio tracks visible on the right hand panel even when the titles of the trailer or outtakes are selected/highlighted on the left panel.
I've done quite a number of DVD->DivX conversations in the past that involves using DVDDecrypter and DVD2AVI (to demux audio). There was once when a similar thing happened, and the cause of it was a strip of alternate ending sequence audio track that was embedded towards the end of the main DD2.0 track, hence I had no audio when I chose to mux the DD5.1 track instead of DD2.0 into the avi.
I would very much want to re-rip the DVD, or to open IFOedit directly on the DVD as you suggest, however the SmartRipped copy on my HDD is the only copy left that I presently have access to, as my original is lost. I only found this ripped copy recently from my 12gig ancient hdd that has been stashed aside for God knows how long now ;-)

Strange.
Your Titlesets in question and others are not showing any audios or subs assoicated with them. But in your VTS_03_0.IFO, it shows an unspecified audio.
Can you double click on your VTS_03_1.VOB in Windows Explorer and let your software player play it? Do you hear any audio?
Another method is to open up this VOB in VOBedit and check the left window for audio packs.

@2COOL
I can open both the original (ripped) VTS_03_1.VOB (trailer) and VTS_05_1.vob (outtakes) with PowerDVD and they both play with full audio. However when I played the processed/backed-up DVDShrink 1:1 outputs they were silent. With the latter I've also tried going through the normal procedure (main menu -> Special features -> Trailer... etc), and it wouldn't play with sound either (tried both standalone DVD player and software player).
I downloaded VOBedit and opened VTS_03_1.VOB with it, the left window had many audio packs scattered around, similar to that of VTS_01._1.VOB (the main movie). There are a lot of info on the right window, would any of them be helpful to the cause?
I appreciate the enthusiasm from both you and MalcomX to help me so far :)

Have you tried DVD Shrink 2.3 if problem still exists?
Kompressor
18th September 2003, 13:38
Ouch just did a test with DVD Shrink 2.3 - The audio tracks will not show at the right-hand-panel, neither does the backed-up trailer VOB play with sound.
I just noticed another thing interesting, its to do with numbers:
According to the DVD Shrink GUI (no compression):
Title 1 (Main Movie) is 3936mb, when I check the aggregate file size of all 5 VTS_01_?.VOB's (0-4), it shows approx 3938. Only a discrepancy of 3mb for nearly 4 gigs of data. The movie is 1hr 25min 38 seconds long.
Title 3 (Trailer) is 96mb, while the true size as shown in Windows Explorer is 99.4mb. The trailer title 3 only lasts for 2min 5 seconds.
Title 5 (Outtakes) is 938mb, while the actual size shown in Windows is 963mb. Discrepancy of 25mb seem to be quite large, for only 18min 28 seconds of video, as when compared to the Title 1 main movie.
I had a peek with my other DVD title Stalingrad which is 2hr 17min 33 seconds long. DVDShrink displays 7536mb, and Explorer size is 7538mb, only a difference of 2mb.
I suspect the 2 tested versions of DVD Shrink was not able to pick up the audio tracks embedded within the 2 Extras VOBs, for reasons unknown (IFO language?), reflected by the significantly reduced volume size displayed in the DVD Shrink interface. Therefore it automatically stripped out the corresponding audio tracks...
Poor me... why do I have to be the odd one with a freak example :(
