I'm just curious of this, but I have noticed a lot of movies are at 700MB > level. And it's in DVD quality and it can fit on a CD. How is that possible? If I rip a DVD, it usually would come out to 1GB or more. How is it possible to get it to 700MB?

Keeping in mind rule 6.....'DVD Quality' is a subjective term, IMO no transcode of a DVD, 1 cd or more, is as good as the original, and theoretically it can't be, DVDs are stored in a lossy format. If you want better quality, follow the doom9 guides, all the info you need is there. <bias> Try XviD if you haven't, and check out the newbie settings sticky. </bias> hth,

To emphasise KpeX's post, just one example from my personal experience.
Some time ago I did a 500 MB rip of »Notting Hill«. It's awful, blocks all over the place. But only if watched from a close distance. When I sit on the couch 2-3 meters away from the monitor the image looks fine. Not one visible block.
Also the quality you can get on a single CD depends heavily on the type of movie, resolution, size of audio stream(s), used filters...

Using an Ogg at q2 is imo just as good as an mp3 at 128 and is smaller in size and overhead, so that's a few more bits to throw at your movie. I once did a movie, From Hell and it was max quality at 500MB with a resolution close to the original.

TO Rockets34Life:
There is a time parameter determining the size of divx/Xvid movie.if the movie is >2hr 20min it is better to go on using more than 1CD.And if u use ac3 sound u can rip a movie of length 1hr 45min easily with 5.1 256kbps ac3 in asingle CD.The other factor determining the compressibility is the darkness in the movie. For eg matrix [2hr 15min] movie is better compressed than Romeo must Die <2Hr.For best ripping knowledge visit the doom9.org and read the guides !
