Hi all.
dvdshrink has just let me know that he's still gonna be busy for another couple of weeks,
and will only be able to start working on DVD Shrink next release in early October.
must... have... patience... :D just been waiting for this to back up my dvd collection, been tempting to try IC8 or 3.0beta5 to do the job, but i think i'll wait for this one
just keeping you informed

Thanks for relaying the information, daddy_fizz. :)
I just want to add that dvdshrink has never said it would be v3.0 final version.
I could still be a beta. ;)
But knowing him, it could as easily be v4.0. :D

I suppose I can still play with my other toys for now and at least most things are on the move again and for the better :D

last I heard from dvdshrink was that there wasn't gonna be a 3.0 final. In other words, skip straight to 3.1 final instead. What does that mean? Well in other words revamp that reauthoring popup new window. Exactly how will it be...only the main man knows himself.

A little off the topic. I just wanted to say how much I appreciate the DVDShrink and other guides, by ddlooping, MackemX and mrbass.
Even me, an idiot, has no trouble following these beautifully rendered instructions.

Yeah, tis sad about the news for sure. But hey what's a few weeks?
I'm not going to update my DVD Shrink 2.3 guide at cdrbase.com/CDRom-Guide until 3 comes out of beta and goes final or 3.1 or 4... take your pick. :D
And Mackem, think I prefer XmekcaM. How about Ssobehtsiyhtraccmkcim even?? lol :D

"I can't wait to see how this wonderful program can be even better."
Well, here is a little something... :D
A list of features dvdshrink will try to implement in the next release (sometimes in October). ;)
Originally written by dvdshrink
Redesign re-author mode
Probably go back to version 2.3 style GUI, with video preview window on the left and allow multiple sources to be opened in the "Titles" window.
Buttons
Allow user-selectable button bitmaps (PNG or GIF)
"Cannot Decrypt VOBS" error
This occurs when DVD is opened in file mode, but whichever software ripped the VOBS forgot to remove the copy protection flag.
Maybe DVD Shrink should continue, read the data anyway and hope for the best.
"Shutdown when finished" option
This option should also be present in the encoding window, so user can change his mind ;-)
"Analysis before backup" option
DVD Shrink should check that video compression is set to "Automatic" before allowing this option. Otherwise, output may be over/under-sized.
Closed Captions
Should not be stripped from the video output
CPU Overheating
Should be fixed by offering a thread priority option in backup window
Non-DeCSS version
Should always distribute a non-deCSS build of the current version so magazines etc can safely review.
Audio Preview, AC3 playback
This could be offered by replacing the preview engine with a DirectShow based source filter: AC3 preview would then be OK if user already has AC3 decoder filters installed (as come with PowerDVD etc, so everyone should have them).
Selection Color
Seems that the choice of gray selection color should be user-configurable.
Win98/2000 problems
I think most of these problems are related to fact that DVD Shrink is compiled with Microsoft Visual C++ .NET version. I may go back to using Visual C++ 6.0 (which was used to compile DVD Shrink 1.03). DVD Shrink does require ASPI drivers (wnaspi32.dll) installed if running on Win95/98.
Audio/Subpicture stream remapping
It may be possible to do this properly (i.e. completely remove disabled streams from the IFO files) in some circumstances: for instance if the stream has been completely disabled over the entire DVD, and not just in one title.
Layer Break
Should be a removal option in preferences.
PGC Command Table in re-author mode
Seems that the current set of commands generated by DVD Shrink (which ensure sequential playback of re-authored titles) cause problems on some players. I'll look into some alternative commands which do the same thing.
Happy drooling. :D
P.S: MackemX, I let dvdshrink know about your emails. ;)

gnipooldd/ddlooping - Was wondering if you can pass on our question to DVDShrink. I was the one who suggested the Audio preview and I noticed in your post that DVDShrink mentions switching to Directshow for the video preview to allow for audio preview. However, DirectShow is not very good at random access and is not frame accurate in its seeking. So he may run into some of the limitations that DirectShow has that we are discussing here: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=376018#post376018 and here:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=61628
We are all very impressed with the video preview window and how fast its random access is. Also impressed with how fast he builds the index file in the analyzing DVD phase at startup. Maybe he could comment in this thread on how he accomplishes these things or what codebase (i.e. mpeg2dec3) that he uses and help some of us out.

Hi jfcarbel. :)
I will try and pass the message along to dvdshrink.
I can't guarantee when he'll get it though, as he's kind of "neglecting" his emails when busy. ;)
"Maybe he could comment in this thread on how he accomplishes these things or what codebase (i.e. mpeg2dec3) that he uses and help some of us out."
I'll include a link to this thread in the email, then it'll be up to him to comment or not. ;)

Hello jupiter0713. :)
Sorry to disappoint you, but as you can see, this feature is not on the list I posted (written by dvdshrink himself).
So it will not make it into the next release. :(
Until it does (if it does ever), you might want to keep an eye on MenuEdit development.
As it is, it can already delete unwanted "video streams" and remove menu buttons functionality, but requires the use of IfoEdit afterward (I think).
Check some of MackemX's posts for more info. ;)

if you really want to be able to remove stuff the easy way, as ddplooping mentions, is Menuedit (I like to call it DVDEdit;)) is the only tool that is capable of doing it and keeping everything as it was
I also know this tool is being developed yet again and will get even better with time. The best thing about Menuedit is that it doesn't limit you to one specific transcoding tool, you can use any
so along with the ease of use and the precision it offers in removal of Cells and the fraction of a second it takes to do it, this is a very valuable tool to have if you strip your DVD's of the unwanted stuff :)
it has a preview so you can play each VOB and decide whether you want to keep it
amyway enough of the plugging for Menuedit as this is a DVDShrink thread :D

So lets say for arguments sake...I shrink the whole project down to 1 DVDR-5, then I open up MenuEdit and can use the DVDShrnk'ed project to go ahead and remove the stuff I dont want?
does that happen to allow me to add in JPG's of placeholders saying "Stream Removed" that I create?
Sorry to keep this going in this thread
daddy_fizz
24th September 2003, 21:42
that would be kind of pointless, you want to shrink the movie after you take out the parts that you don't want-therefore you can use the extra space you freed up for the movie...

MackemX
24th September 2003, 21:43
it would be best to do it before using DVDShrink
Menuedit gives you the ability to put any Cell in the place of the removed Cell and normally you would just stick a 0.xx second black blank in it's place
actually that is exactly what I'm in the middle of doing as I'm creating some blanks with words and pictures on also instead of blanks :)
so you can do what you suggest and have it tell you it's been removed

Hi,
...mentions switching to Directshow for the video preview to allow for audio preview. However, DirectShow is not very good at random access and is not frame accurate in its seeking.
A DirectShow based preview engine would require DVD Shrink to implement a custom source filter which could deliver decrypted audio/video data to whichever decoders the user has installed. In this case, probably the frame step fwd and bwd buttons would be dropped, but seeking would hopefully be implemented in the same way as current implementation (dvd IFO files contain an index table for each vobu (=GOP) in the VOBS: the current preview engine uses this table for seeking, I don't build a separate index file).
DVD Shrink video decoder is not based on mpeg2dec3 or any other public library.

I'd rather see frame accuracy than audio preview - although switching would be cool

Now that the new version of recode is out, maybe DVDShrink will have more time for his program.
