Ok, I am the proud owner of a prismiq media player and I am trying to find the best way to store video to give me the best combination of filesize to quality.
PrismIQ Webpage (http://www.prismiq.com) and PrismIQ Forums (http://www.prismiq.org)
The PrismIQ box decodes mpeg-1/2 in hardware on the box. Everything else (DIVX for sure, and I believe everything else) is re-encoded to mpeg-1 on the server (Win or Linux PC) and then streamed to the player.
Most of what I've read on doom9 seems mostly interested in either:
Backing up DVDs onto a HD for small files with minimal quality loss.
Making a backup of a full DVD for burning onto a DVD-R
Burning ont CD-R as VCD/sVCD
Converting DIVX or other compressions to DVD/VCD formats
What I'm looking for is a bit different, so I'm hoping someone out there can help.
I'm looking to store the flix on my DVDs on to my HD, but as either VOB or Mpeg-2. Stuff that starts as DIVX is easy enough to reencode to mpeg-2, but the original VOBs (after stripping out the unneeded streams) have given me issues.
I use TMPEG-ENC for encoding and it can usually read the m2v stream, but never the ac3 stream. I basically have to change the ac3 into a wav or something, then add it to TMPEG and then I can shrink it.
Could I use DVDShrink to shrink the entire DVD to 50% and then merge the VOBs? The problem there is that I would like an easier way to pull out the PGCs I need (This can be painful with TVShow DVDs).
Long-term, my goal would be to copy the full DVD structure to my HD for backup/storage, and then pull out the video clips that I want to be able to stream to the player and save those with a single stream each for A/V, but at a reduced bitrate.
