i am newbie in divx, and i beguin to use gordian knot
i have read the guide, and search on forum but i have a doubt for the chronologie of operations.

i encode film whith this parameters

first i chose one cd
film : 1h54
bit/pixel*frame : 1.73
i made a compressibilty check and after i move the slider resolution
to obtain 53 pour cent, so i obtain
resolution : 448*240
i put bilinear for resize
the video is god but not exellent

i have just one question :
if i decide to use two cd, after my test must i

* choose two cd, and after move resolution to obtain 70 pour cent ?

* do all operation from the beguin : ?
choose two cd
bit/pixel*frame : near 2.5
made a compressibilty check and move the slider resolution
to obtain 70 pour cent,

thanks for your response, but i have a doubt

Welcome to Doom9's forum, bewbew.

This is only my advice, from my experience. Other members may provide you with different recommendations.

Use the initial b/p*f value as a guide for setting resolution and/or your number of CDs, prior to your first compressibility test. From that point forward, use the percentage (%) value returned from the tests. That value compares your current b/p*f to the maximum possible with your current resolution, resizing filter, and other settings. The percentage will be more helpful to you as a measure of compressiblity and possible quality than a single b/p*f value.

My personal preference is to avoid bilinear resizing. It gives good compression, but I don't care for how it looks. The "softest" resizing I use is Neutral Bicubic, and I typically use Lanczos or Sharp Bicubic.

thanks for your response
now it's more clear.

i will try to beguin with lanczos, and if % under 70 for the same resolution i'll try neutral bicubic.
if it's under 70 i'll decrease resolution or take 2 cd

Sharp bicubic usually gives you 2-3% more of compressabilty comparing to Lanczos. Neutral bicubic gives you 5-6% more (comparing to sharp).

p.s. b-frames will give you 20-30% increase. So usually if comp test gave you low values it's a good place to start :)

*thanks for the value : i have made test and found nearly the same value.
bilinear give a best value but the video is to blur.
so i think in the futur i will begin with lanczos, and if % (pour cent ) near 70 it's ok
if it's lower than 70 i will try sharp, end after neutral

* B frame = bidirectionnel encoding in divx codec propertie profiles ?
i always use bidirectionnel
but i can't use GMC or quarter pixel because i plan to by a player sigmatek in 2 days.

it seem people are not entouthiast for a player, and prefer play divx on pc and send to TV
i think it's true because on pc it's easy ( not always for me ) to configure codec etc ...
and sometime i friend give me divx i could not play on sigmatek and i will must reencod in divx.
but in most case i will do the video myself, with my parameters and my experince.
so for the moment i make test
during 2 years i have make SVCD film on 2 CD with CCE and the result was very good,
but i am curious and divx with gordian give very good result.
i thinks all codec are interesting , it's depand what we want to do

I have some question, and peraphs i will do another post :
i have made 5 divx for test on my player in some days
some are 640x.., 608x..., 576x...with different check %
i don't know what is the best resolution on a player sigmatek or kiss : 640x... ?
i have not found answers
my TV is PAL,
on pc 576x.. seem good
what is the best : make 576x... with % near 70 or 640x... with % near 50 ?
near 50 % peraphs i will have macroblocs
is 576x... on monitor (progressive) PC is best that on player sigmatek or kiss on TV PAL ?

i think it's difficult to respond, because it's depend of my eyes, distance from screen, compressiblity film etc ...
i and i will make a lot of test myself.
but if people have different experience and some idea i am interested .
i think i have two solution
- always take 640x..., with check % near 70 and if need take 2 cd
- take 608x... or 576x...(minimum resolution) with % not under 50 or 60

thanks for your help, and pateince
