View Full Version : Problem using Roba plugin and with playback

Hi everybody!
Spend the last week reading about Roba and other ways to encode movies in less than 10 hours using my aged PIII-500MHz. Used Lubitsch's 'To Be or Not to Be' (4:3,mono, black&white) for my tests. My goal was to fill two 800 CDs.
First problem: When using the Roba plugin it starts looking for the q-value starting and stopping CCE. Everything as it should be. But then at some point the plugin starts the CCE, the 'open-file'-dialog pops up and that's it. The first time my computer waited a whole night for someone to tell him what to do (me being fast asleep :) ) Is this a bug in the plugin or am I doing something wrong?
Second problem: After much trial and error I finally found the q-value to fill 2 CDs and after only 5 hours the images were ready to be burned. My computer playes them just fine but my standalone (Philips DVD 622) doesn't even recognize them.
I then did another test:
used the exact same settings as before (1-pass vbr, q-value 46, ...) but encoded only a single chapter (2.46 min). Burned the image and the standalone plays it without a problem. During a previous test I ended up with a disk being half full and the player wouldn't play it so the CD being filled to the max doesn't seem to be the problem.
Anybody got any idea?
Unfortunately I forgot to bring the ini- and log-files to work, but if anybody wants to take a look at them I coult post them tomorrow (don't really know if it would help).
Thx in advance
P.S. Just to see if the week of diggin' into Roba was any good:
Is it right that the method described in One Pass VBR (http://www.mpegit.net/eng_svcd.php) is really the same as using the Roba plugin set to a fixed number of CDs?

Yes, but automated.

Found the time to do some more tests.
The problem seems to be with the final image creation.
Using VCDXBuild:
Standalone doesn't play the cd
Using VCDImager:
Standalone plays the cd, shows timecode, can switch between audio tracks, no chapters
Using VCDEasy:
Standalone plays the cd, no timecode, can't open system menu (i.e. can't switch audio tracks etc), chapters work fine
Any tips how to create an image that combines the best of the last two?

There is a whole raft of different settings available to you in the image tab to help with oddball players. Try a Short 5 chapter encode changing the PBC type, entrysvc and other combos till you find one that works. The fact that you have problems with vcdeasy tells me most probably it is your player. VCD easy also has several setting adjustments. It will be a real pain for you to try the different settings and burn them, but from a positive side it will only need to be done once to find out what it will take (hopefully). Good luck and I think you will find the problem in the pbc area as you said vcdimager gets it nearly right. It uses no PBC (play back control).
