View Full Version : Clipping a VOB

I've just recorded a VOB from my digital TV card which is about 1 1/2 hours longer than I need (Needed to record something when I was at work, blah :( ), and its 5.9GB size seems to disagree with PowerDVD (Which doesn't seem to take a crash well, for some reason), so I'd like to crop it to about 1 hour 45 minutes in size.

I've tried using vobSplitter but it has a tough interface. Is there anything else out there that can be used to shorten my file. It does also seem that audio sync is lost if I seek in the stream too much, is that due to all the funny packets TV cards like to put in?

Try Drag/dropping it onto your desktop IfoEdit Icon.
That should make some IFOs.
Then open it with DVDShrink in Re-Author mode and cut it to size.

I've tried making IFOs for it with IFOEdit, but the program doesn't react when it's supposed to be scanning the file. Is there a version of it with a debug mode so I could try to figure out what's going on? :(

Tried demuxing it ?

Tried demuxing with VobEdit, was ignored. Tried doing it with vStrip and got a sync error. Managed to do it with bbdmux although there does still seem to be some sort of special packet at the start of the video stream that's causing PowerDVD to crash. (Putting it through bbinfo revealed an error along the lines of "Not allowed in a program stream")...

To top it all off it doesn't seem that the DTS/PTS values are correct, any software I try to use with it (Except the TV recorder) either ignores me or crashes. :(

The video strean is in there, although it may need sorting out to make it compatible with the DVD standard (Clearly the TV tuner doesn't use it as a standardised stream). Any help?

Try the cut feature in TMpeg it can be left at full size, click ok and it writes a new file.

Other suggestions for chopping the vob include chopper xp to cut the vob or you can also use vstrip with GUI...I've used the latter a few times and it's rather precise.

As you can extract the video stream, you can try cutting it with an mpeg-2 editor like womble or m2 edit pro (not free but better than tmpgenc, IMO, if you can get your hands on either). Then cut the audio stream by the same MS with HeadAC3he and import into an authoring app.

Okay, after reading about in the DVB/HDTV forum, I PVAStrumento'd it and then put the demuxed files through TMPG DVD Author. I can now play them (Yay! :D), although the audio plays ahead of the video by about half a second. Is there a way I can fix that?

You didn't try my suggestion then ?

If anyone knows a easier way please speakup, I tend to solve everything the hard way. Use besweet to transcode your audio file to a wav. Load the video in vdubmod and select the wav as the audio. Use the interleave function to get your exact milliseconds offset needed. Go back to besweet and pass your original file thru besweet using the time offset function. I'm at work and can't remember what it's exact label is, but it's on the left hand side of the Gui. This will not work if the audio is stretched. I hope someone knows an easier or faster way and sees this thread.:) :) :) :) :D

I think the sync gets lost when you demux.
Cutting the VOB (which has its own timecode) would be the answer if TMpeg can read it!
