View Full Version : Last part of movie is encoded with low bitrate
videocheez
13th September 2003, 21:00
I have been using GK to compress to Divx 5 some DV of family movies. the quality is impressive. Unfortunately I believe that the credits set-up is reducing the bitrate of the last 10 seconds of a five minute clip. The last ten seconds are not credits but a a beautiful picture of my daugter and cousin and i dont want those pretty ladies to look blurry. Any suggestions to help me make my movie keep the same bitrate all tehway through will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
VC

Hi-
Did you make a Credits.avs? If not, there shouldn't be a reduction in quality near the end. Do you have a log file of the encode that you can post?
videocheez
15th September 2003, 03:22
Yes. Thanks for the response. There are several log files in the GK directory so i will post them all. I did the encode again and this time more than half of the movie is blurred. The only change that i made was changed the credits portion under the option tab to multipass first pass. I have in clude the following log files. The gordian knot log file, the besweet log file, Thanks in advance,
VC

Hi-
My guess is that you started the higher Credits quants too soon. The log says:
CreditsStart: 3465
And that's from a 10395 frame video. So yes, more than half is done at credits quant. Since you're using the whole CD for a 10 minute video, I might suggest skipping Credits encoding entirely and make the whole thing top quality. You didn't actually fill the CD anyway, did you?
Before encoding just make sure the whole thing is included (no Trim at all). Otherwise, if you still want to encode the credits at a lower quant, before encoding (in the Edit Window), make sure the Trim is set for the proper frames.

Thanks for the advice. I have made sure that "no trim" is selected but my little clip still has blurry video for a great portion of the video. I cant figure out what i have done wrong. I have attached my GK log file again and this time it says credit start at 0. I tried to trick it and say credit start on the last frame but I still had a bit of the movie that was blurry. Can I edit the avisynth script and make GK encode the entire video at the high bitrate that i desire or can I clear all of the GK setup stuff that I may have accidently clicked. I saw a button that says delet registry. I do remember a few a days ago that I clicked the button that says something like "start credits here" and I was on frame 3465. When I clicked that button i thought it would pop up another screen to select where i wanted the credit encoding to start. I didnt realize that it was going to start credit encoding from the point on the screen that i was viewing. Somebody else metioned in the that virtual dub has perhaps not released the lock on the program from the previous time that I ran it. I'm just metioning this in case it means something to you. This time I will attach the GK log file and also the avisynth file. I appreciate your time. Once I figure this out I'll leave you alone on this matter. I have a lot of video to convert and I want to keep moving on.
Thanks in advance,
VC

Hi-
I can think of 2 things to try next:
1. Raise the resolution. I don't know what resolution you're capturing at, but it's higher than 480x320 isn't it? Take the resolution up close to the capture resolution. 480x320 by itself is enough to make the video smooth, or unsharp, or slightly blurry.
2. Deinterlace? Are you capturing progressive frames, or interlaced frames? Don't know the difference? Then read a bit around the pictures in this tutorial (http://www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm). When you play the video in GKnot, or advance one frame at a time in a scene where there's motion, do you see those thin parallel horizontal black lines in every frame? Then you have to deinterlace. I might recommend the DGBob deinterlacing option in GKnot.
And the Trim wasn't being used this time:
#trim(startframe,endframe)
That's from the .avs. The "#" in front of the line means that whatever follows it (in this case the Trim command) isn't being used. In fact, you have only 5 things being actually used in that long .avs:
SetWorkingDir("C:\PROGRA~1\GORDIA~1\")
LoadPlugin("mpeg2dec3.dll")
avisource("C:\Documents and Settings\daddy\My Documents\Adobe\Premiere\sacramento.francis.don\gknot5\kocheski.25.1.ana.avi")
crop(0,0,720,480)
LanczosResize(480,320)
And since you didn't actually crop anything, you can comment out that line also (put a "#" in front of it).
Once I figure this out I'll leave you alone on this matter.
Don't worry about it. You're a friendly sort, and we're here to help (or try to help, anyway).

Success. It finally worked to my satisfaction for now. I really apprecieate your help. I want to try a few things however to get better at this and to also understand whats going on. I took you advice by selecting a higher resolution. I thought that by lowering the resolution the picture would be clearer. I also began reading the interlace guide. Thats some kinda complicated stuff that will take me awhile to comprehend. Im pretty sure that my source is interlaced. I could see the little lines as I scanned frame by frame. I also forgot to metion that my source had frame rate of 29.97. I selected the IVTC option at the end prior to encoding so this may have made a difference. In between all of this experimenting I unintalled GK and reinstalled it a few times assuming that I screwed up something.
When I reinstalled it i noticed that the box where you select no trim or trim etc. was all greyed out so that I could not select this option. Now what have i done to screw things up. I also took your advice about not trying to fill a whole CD. After all, it's only five minutes of video so i instead selected a half CD size. I'm going to try it again tonight before going to bed and this tme i'll try filling the whole CD since i belive that the IVTC option not being checked could have been the source of my problems. Oh yea I also installed the GK patch but i did not see the DGBob deinterlacing option, instead i saw smartbob. I will attach the GK file and the avsynth again so that you can perhaps tell what i may have done to prevent myself from being able to select the trim options.
Thanks in advance,
VC

Hi-
I'll preface this by saying that I know nothing about Digital Video. Never captured anything from my TV, and never made home movies with a DV camera.
First, I'm not real sure that you have resized to a correct aspect ratio. Doesn't the camera capture it in correct aspect ratio-that is to say, when you play it, it looks right? Nobody looks too fat or too tall and skinny? Do you know at what resolution you're taking the movies? If so, you should probably use that same resolution in the .avi for best quality. So, instead of having 16:9 or 4:3 as your Input Pixel Aspect Ratio, you should have 1:1. This is in the Resolution Tab of GKnot. If there's some garbage or black along the sides, then crop that out and resize. You seem to be taking the movies in .avi form, so I think they should be 1:1, but 480x320 and 640x432 are unusual resolutions. But maybe that's how the movies are taken, I don't know. Maybe you're already using 1:1. You can check the .avi that GKnot gives you. Look for something round, a clock, a ball, a tire, a moon, and they may look like slight ovals. Or faces (which are harder to tell) may not look quite right. If you've already taken these things into account, then ignore me.
I selected the IVTC option at the end
Probably not a good idea. If the video is interlaced (as I suspect), then IVTC'ing it will make it play slightly jerky. Find a scene where the camera pans slowly, or someone is walking. You should see the jerkiness fairly easily if you've IVTC'd and made it 23.976fps. About all you can do is to deinterlace the whole thing and keep it at 29.97fps.
this time i'll try filling the whole CD
You won't be able to as long as the compress test percentage is over 100%. 100% means maximum file size, and even that is overkill.
i did not see the DGBob deinterlacing option
My fault. There are several Smart Bobs and DGBob is the one that GKnot currently uses. If you go to the Deinterlacing section of the .avs, you'll see:
DGBob(order=1,single=true)
There is, however, an even better one now. It's called KernelDeInt. You can find it here:
http://www.avisynth.org/~warpenterprises/
If you decide to use it, put the KernelDeInt.dll in with your other .dlls in the GKnot folder. Then add this line up near the top with the other LoadPlugins:
LoadPlugin("KernelDeInt.dll")
And in the .avs, down in the Deinterlacing Section add this line:
KernalDeInt(Order=1,Sharp=True)
This assumes that you have Top Field First. I don't know what your camera gives you. The doc that comes with KernelDeInt will show you how to determine which you have. Or you can just encode with (Order=1) and see if the finished .avi looks "normal". Or you can use GKnot's SmartBob and hold off on the "advanced" stuff for awhile.
i noticed that the box where you select no trim or trim etc. was all greyed out
When you had the .d2v picture of the video open, did you use the slider and the buttons to go to where the credits begin, and then hit "Set Credits Start"? Only then are the Trim options made available to you. I think that's about all. Damn, this was long. :)

Thanks for all of the help, im satisfied with my first experience with GK. I'm not going to waste too much time on this project especially sice the movies are of my wifes family anyways. I would like to comment on a few of your respones. My camera shoots at DVD resolution 720x480. I have chosen to reduce the size to save space. The aspect error was minimal with those goofy resolutions. I would like to choose something standard.
All of the deinterlacing options so far had made vdub crash. I read in the GK full guide that if your video is not 23.976fps then you should check IVTC.
You are right when i tried to fill the whole CD I have nice results. The got the blurry video at the end. I think there bitrate may be too high when you try to make five min of video fit onto one cd unless there is a lot of motion.
I apprecieate the help sometime the people at doom9 are not to friendly when a newbie asks a stupid question but you have helped me, taught me a lot and pointed me in the right direction.

I have an additional comment, which might help clear up confusion over IVTC. IVTC stands for InVerse TeleCine.
Telecining is the process that video production companies use to take 35mm film, designed to be projected at 24 frames per second, and converting it to NTSC video at 29.97 fps. This process is outlined in our IVTC tutorial (www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm). I recommend reviewing it, at least for background.
Inverse Telecine (IVTC) is the process of taking a Telecined video and reversing that process. One ends up with the original frames, at just under 24 frames per second -- 23.976, actually.
Content that has never been Telecined should never be IVTC'ed -- you'll lose 6 frames every second, which will produce jerky video as Manono pointed out.If your DV is interlaced, as described, it should be deinterlaced for use in PC environments.
We can help you determine why your encode is not succeeding. So please, try once more, but this time selecting a deinterlacing filter rather than IVTC, but ... rather then pressing Save & Encode after selecting the filter, press the Preview button instead. This will take the .avs script, save it in a "Preview.avs" file in the Gknot folder, and open it with Windows Media Player 6.4. If the .avs fails to open, you will see an error message rather than video. If VdubMod doesn't get video from the script due to some sort of error, it won't be able to encode anything.

Hi-
...especially since the movies are of my wifes family anyways.
If you show them some nice results, then next it'll be, "Oh Mr. Cheez, can you make me a DVD from this?" You could be opening a real can of worms here.
My camera shoots at DVD resolution 720x480.
Must be a heck of a camera. Maybe it really does take it's footage at 4:3 DAR, instead of 1:1 as I had supposed. The manual would tell you.
All of the deinterlacing options so far had made vdub crash.
jggimi's got that one covered.
I read in the GK full guide that if your video is not 23.976fps then you should check IVTC.
Well, not exactly. I think you said earlier that every frame was interlaced. That kind of video shouldn't be IVTC'd. The telltale sign that it has been telecined is when in every 5 frames, you see 3 non-interlaced (progressive) frames, followed by 2 interlaced frames. Only then can you IVTC.
sometime the people at doom9 are not too friendly when a newbie asks a stupid question
I checked out your past posts, and for the most part I saw courteous and patient answers. But most people here expect you to meet them halfway, and do a thorough search before posting a question. The chances are good that you're not the only person to have had that particular problem, and it may have been discussed before. I also saw that you've been working on making DVDs already.
Anyway, good luck to you, VC. Come back if there's anything else we can help you with.

OK, I tried your advice and I previewed it instead of saving and encoding. I also selected the smartbob filter. I was able to play the video with media player but when I tried to encode, I got an error that says avisynth wasnt happy. The IVTC option was turned off. I tried the field interlace option and media player failed and gave the error that that plugin would only work for YUY2 or YV12. Should I add the line ConvertToYUY2() by editing the avisynth script. If I edit the script will GK use the edited script? I will post the GK file and the avisynth file again. I would like to find out whats going on because it pretty fun learning this stuff.
I also went and reedited my DV and made a new avi that was deinterlaced. It was option that i wasnt aware of but since you started mentioning deinterlacing i decided to go back to my raw video and do something else. I took that little piece of video when I accidently encoded the compressiblity test and made that the opeing video clip. I then merged that to the rest of my clip. It looks really cool now and its deinterlaced. I'm going to try to convert that tomorrow night.
Nevertheless I would like to learn how to handle the interlaced video. Tomorrow night I will have a chance to read the links about IVTC and interlacing. Perhaps you may have some suggestions based on the attached files.
As a side note I also encoded the deinterlaced video to REAL video. I'm going to mail the realtives a divx CD and let them view the real media file on my new "still under construction" website when I finally get all of this stuff looking nice.
Thanks for the time,
VC

Since your .avs script produced visible video, then we now know it's not a script related issue you are having.
If you would describe the actual error messages you get from VdubMod with this apparently valid deinterlaced .avs, further assistance may be possible.

Hi-
You can play the .avs with DGBob. DGBob supports RGB, YUY2, and YV12. You can't play the .avs with FieldDeinterlace. FieldDeinterlace supports only YUY2 and YV12. Therefore, your camera films in RGB. Either that, or that's what Adobe Premiere is giving you if it's been edited in there. We don't have this problem when transcoding DVDs, as they're always in the YV12 colorspace. It's always a good idea to test the .avs in the Preview, or by opening it in VDubMod and scrolling around before doing the encoding, to make sure everything's OK. I saw from my researches that you learned about ConvertToYUY2() from your CCE experiences. So, yes, when you run into that problem again with your interlaced .avis, you might stick a Convert line in there:
SetWorkingDir("C:\PROGRA~1\GORDIA~1\")
LoadPlugin("mpeg2dec3.dll")
LoadPlugin("decomb.dll")
LoadPlugin("dgbob.dll")
avisource("C:\Documents and Settings\daddy\My Documents\Adobe\Premiere\sacramento.francis.don\gknot7\kocheski.25.1na.avi")
ConvertToYUY2(Interlaced=True)
crop(0,0,720,480)
DGBob(order=1,single=true)
LanczosResize(672,448)
This still doesn't answer the question about why the encoding crashes, though. You might try and stick that ConvertTo... line in there anyway and see what happens. Failing that, as jggimi said, we'd need to see the exact error message.
jggimi, could it have to do with him having the .avi in the Documents and Settings folder? Might it make a difference by having something like:
avisource("C:\Home Movies\kocheski.25.1na.avi")
? He had a similar (?) problem in this thread:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49260
There are some pretty screwy things in that last log file, not the least of which is his first pass fps:

...couuld it have to do with him having the .avi in the Documents and Settings folder? ... He had a similar (?) problem ...
That thread in the CCE forum points to a different problem, possibly from using \\computer\folder rather than a local file name structure.
There are some pretty screwy things in that last log file...
I'll say. Did you see this?11:57:24 PM: WARNING: Number of counted frames differs from settings!
11:57:24 PM: WARNING: Settings: 10395
11:57:24 PM: WARNING: Counted: 2644
11:57:24 PM: WARNING: Difference: 7751 I'm guessing VdubMod still had a problem with the video, and crashed or otherwise did not end properly.
Cheez, start VdubMod manually, and open the .avs file. Use the File...Information command, and see what VdubMod thinks is in the video stream produced by the .avs script. How many frames does it see?
If it shows 10,395 frames, use the slider and see if the entire video is actually there. If everything looks good, then I'd begin to have other suspicions, such as an early exit of VdubMod through being out of disk space, or perhaps a failure of VdubMod due to hardware instability. You're not overclocking, are you?

Thanks for the reminder. You think i'm a newbie now you should have seen me then. I forgot about having that problem before. I always do my cce encoding right on the C: drive. I bet that will solve some of the problems.
As i mentioned before. I'm able to use premiere to deinterlace the video prior to importing to GK but I want to be able to handle interlaced video too. Justin case im not using premier to edit.
I added the line ConvertToYUY2(Interlaced=True) to the avisynth script and the preview worked. Also this time Vdub didnt crash. I used the field deinterlace option. My CCE experience gave me a decent idea even though I don't know what it means.
It's fun to use a program like GK that is mainly setup for dvd conversion to Divx for another application. If i keep this up, I'll be able to write a little guide eventually. I looked in the DV forum here at doom9 and the DV to divx sticky guide only uses GK to help find some bitrates. They don't even mention using GK to do the whole conversion. This is cool how although you guys don't fool with DV you are able to help me by what you know about ripping/converting dvd's.
Is Dgbob a deinterlacer for RGB?

If i see the message again i'll post it. I cant remember now but you are right it did have something to do difference in frames counted between passes. I'm not overclocking but often multi-task while encoding. I also have a lot of hardrive space.
Thanks for the time,

Hi-
So that was it, eh? I didn't even begin to think it was a colorspace problem until you provided that information on FieldDeinterlace and DGBob. I've never used Premiere, but you might look around in there to see if it will output YUY2 or (less likely) YV12 for you, to save you some of the hassle. There are certainly some other people around here that could answer that question. Maybe in the DV Forum.
Is Dgbob a deinterlacer for RGB?
It supports all 3 colorspaces (FieldDeinterlace doesn't). But evidently VDubMod in Fast Recompress doesn't support RGB, if you solved the problem by adding that ConverTo... line to the .avs. You could probably encode directly in VDubMod in Full Processing Mode without problem.
My CCE experience gave me a decent idea even though I don't know what it means.
Wanna read up on colorspaces? Try here (http://www.avisynth.org/index.php?page=Section+3%3A+Filters%2C+plugins+and+colorspaces), and especially here (http://www.avisynth.org/index.php?page=DataStorageInAviSynth).

Now that this has been solved, I would like to save the settings in GK. I think that I have figured out how to save my settings in GK but I want to know if saving the settings under a different name like, interlaced.dv.five.min.clip.gks will save the avisynth script file in GK.
Also the other related question is what does interlaced=true mean. When converting avi to mpeg2 I always left the parenthesis empty whenever I used the ConvertToYUY2()line.

I havent been able to figure out vdub mod yet. So far before GK I have only used vdub to extract audio from avi and to do a little resizing. There is no audio tab like the other virtual dubs so I cant quite figure out how to handle audio with vdub mod.
Also, whats the basic difference between vdubmod and nandub. These programs all seem to be the same.
Thanks in advance,

Hi-
...will save the avisynth script file in GK.
If I understand you correctly, you want GKnot to hand you a basic sort of template .avs that you can use without having to edit it every time to add in such things as the ConvertTo... line or any filters not already included. And the answer is that you can't yet do that. If I'm not mistaken, though, something like that is planned for the very near future in a coming GKnot release.
I might recommend that you make your own basic .avs, such as the 9 line one I gave you a couple of posts ago. Then open the new .avi in GKnot, pretend you're going to generate a new .avs, open the Edit window and cut and paste such things as the different AviSource line or Resize into your template. That's how I do it. Then when the time comes to encode, go to the Encoder Tab, then Add Job, and Select your Frame Server (.avs), rather than the one that GKnot wants to give you.
Also the other related question is what does interlaced=true mean.
Yeah, I also just use ConvertToYUY2() when working with CCE. But when working with interlaced clips for .avis, evidently adding Interlaced=True is better. I don't understand why. I just do what they tell me. :) Here's some more information on that:
http://www.avisynth.org/index.php?page=Convert
There is no audio tab like the other virtual dubs so I cant quite figure out how to handle audio with vdub mod.
If using MP3, you'd have to create the audio yourself in BeSweet or HeadAc3he (or through GKnot). Muxing is easy enough, though, either when encoding or afterwards. Go Streams Tab-Stream List-Add, and add your pre-made audio. If you have to set the delay (should have been done already during the audio encoding), then right click the Audio Stream to access the Interleaving window.
Also, whats the basic difference between vdubmod and nandub.
NanDub is purely for encoding in DivX 3.11 SBC. You can do other things with it, such as mux and split .avis, but you don't need it if encoding with DivX5 or XviD.

Hi again. Another thing that is funny is that Im trying to select the same output resolution as the input and GK will not let me select 720x480. When I use the up down errors as well as the sliding bar to select resolution, GK skips certain resolutions. I would like to not change the resoltion at all if possible. I have been selecting smart crop. Any suggestions will be apprecieated.
Thanks in advance,
