ive checked that the player will play -r disks.
i burned the dvd using nero at 2x instead of 4.
the disk plays fine in my computer.
on the standalone, i get this: the top of the screen is the video, the bottom half is blocks of green/red/blue...and so on. after about 7 seconds or so from where stop pressing fastforward, the whole screen becomes totally one color (random?) and the counter stops on the player. if ive done something wrong, please let me know!
thanks

hummus19 It may be that your player accepts DVD-R/RW but it can also be that you are using a defective or bad media. Your standalone is less forgiving than playing it on your computer. Can your player use DVD-RW? You could test using that.

the only other burned dvd ive ever come across was when my mom sent all her old reel-to-reels to this company in georgia. they sent her back ten -r disks with the movies on it and it played fine. the disks im using is maxell dvd-r. if i screwed up in video encoding for the dimensions of the file, would that cause something like this? (i.e...i made it the wrong size?

Yes it could if u r dvding a svcd movie that u patched to fake the right resolution and your player is a Toshiba one.

It may well be Nero's fault as well. I suggest to try your tests on a rewritable and give imgtools and dvddecrypter a try.

i believe the web address was something like www.dvdrhelp.com or something similar....anyway, i went there, looked up my standalone dvd player and found that it supports most dvd-r, very few dvd-rw and almost none of the +r/+rw disk. i hate to go spend money on rw disks if my player wouldnt accept them even if they were perfect.

One rw disk for all your tests isn't that expensive. The best one shouldn't cost more that 4-5 euros/dollars in the most expensive store around.
