View Full Version : Copy files to HD without leaving incriminating evidence.

The PC that I am using at work runs XP Pro (NTFS file system) and so is ideal for playing DivX movies during the quiet spells :) . However, to avoid leaving incriminating evidence, I need a way to copy files to the HD without the Properties showing me to be the Owner of the files.

I'm guessing that the best way to do this would be to boot the machine into another OS (Linux?) and copy the files without me needing to log in.
Is this the only way to do it, and if so, could someone please point me in the direction of a simple to use (I've never used Linux before) program that is bootable and can be put on a CD or floppy.

Many thanks,

Cheers, Beastie.

PS: An example of a command line to do this might also be useful.

Sorry, Beastie.

As far as I know, NTFS file systems can not be safely written to from any OS other than WNT, W2K, or WXP.

There are utilities and tools for Linux/Unix that can read the structures, but to date, no one on the NTFS sourceforge project has been able to write on an NTFS file system successfully -- that means with integrity and safety for the existing files and structures on the disk.

Yes, most Linux distributions allow mounting NTFS file systems. But they only allow the user to have read access.

I think you'd be better off with a USB connected disk drive. Of course, you might have to be an administrator to use it. :-)

Why copy em to HD - use GeexBox to play em from CD :D
That should really leave no evidences ;)
