Hello :)

I have an AverTV Stereo PCI capture card.

I've heard that with some capture cards you should capture NTSC at 720x480 but with other capture cards you should capture at 704x480

Which is the proper way to capture with the capture card I have?

Also does it change based on the resolution I am using. For instance I rarely use 720x480 (only sometimes) but most of the time I resize to 352x480

Thanks in advance for the answers :)

P.S.
I have some PAL VHS videos I also want to capture and I did a test clip where I did the capture at 768x576 and then resized that to 720x576 ... is that correct for PAL settings?

capping 768 -> resize to 704 -> maybe letterbox to 720

nearly all capturecards are introducing a false AR when capturing with 720px.
capping in 704 and everything should be fine.

When I import a capture at 704x480 into TMPGEnc and select FULL SCREEN (KEEP ASPECT RATIO) it seems to center the image with black on the sides. I suppose this is the same as an AviSynth scrpt where you keep the resolution at 704x480 but then add borders of 8 on either side.

Is that the correct method? Or should you "stretch" the 704 to 720?

IN TMPGenc, 4:3 Display is the right option. Because while playback the 704px are corrected for 4:3 AR.

704 -> resize -> 720 = wrong
704 -> letterbox -> 720 = correct
