Hi,

Every commercial DVD I have *ever* seen has a VBR video stream, allowing long play time without compromising image quality in complex scenes.

"Personal" DVD authoring stuff I have seen (in my very limited experience) will only allow CBR encoding, limiting the play time dramatically. Simple scenes use the same bitrate as complex scenes.

Of course you can push the rate down, but that starts to badly affect the complex scenes.

As far as I am aware, the audio is always VBR (unless you select PCM).

Any pointers to DVD encoders that offer VBR for the video stream?

Thanks.

I think I've seen one DVD that used CBR, was like 7 mbit or something though.

audio = CBR, it's the spec.

Use CCE or TMPGEnc (latter is much cheaper if you can't afford CCE *snigger*) for video encoding.

This stuff should be very clear from the guides on the site I'd think
