to amplify your mp2 file, use BeSplit v0.9b5.
commandline example :
BeSplit -core( -input oldfile.mp2 -output newfile.mp2 -logfile BeSplit.txt -type mp2 ) -ota( -G max )

The same question appliead to other popular
audio codecs.

To be more precise: I have some DIVX\XVID files
with MP3 audio track the volume of which is so low that
that I can hardly hear it. I would like to change the
volume of these audio track without brute force
re-encoding (which creates degradation of audio quality).
(I'll use VirtualDub to replace the older MP3 by the
the amplified one.)

I guess that it is possible to amplify
the "volume level" of MP3 with _minimal_
re-encoding which preserve the original quality
of sound.

Look here (http://www.google.com/url?sa=U&start=1&q=http://www.geocities.com/mp3gain/&e=747). Don't forget to read the helpfile.

Use MP3Gain as Tri suggested to you. No modifications will be applied to the MP3 file except for the gain (anyway the process is reversible and completely "lossless" like you said).
