I've tried just about every version I can, and I still can't find one which allows better color controls. I'm talking about things like gain, brightness, saturation, contrast, etc. The two options which are there are fairly outdated. While I like the vdubmod options, I do not like trying to use that program to decode vobs, especially as I can't seem to find a straightforward way to append files, and I really don't want to have to bother with avisynth if I can help it.

Is there some version which allows modification of these levels on the scale of say aviutl which I absolutely love for simple power, but dislike now for the speed of decoding compared to yuy in dvd2avi. Or is there a better program for that sort of real-time speed with powerful color controls?

Also, is there actually a true 2-pass version of dvd2avi, or a method of using true 2-pass with divx5? I'm talking about basically 1-step 2-pass, as opposed to simply making dvd2avi automatically prompt me when it's done with the first pass, and have it sitting and waiting for me to do the change in divx5.

Not AFAIK. Learn AviSynth instead. It looks very complicated but it's the ultimate video editing tool really. You get complete control of everything, and together with VDMod you're obnly a single button from testing a changed value.

No such version has been released yet AFAIK.

Ok thanks, I'll take your knowledge level as authoritative.

Guess I'll go get the f'ing manual for avisynth and read it:)

You could use the new version of FairUse for automated 2 pass DivX 5 / XviD encoding...

Thanks also for that previous link to fairuse, but with the ability to *very* easily load multiple vob's into virtualdub mod, and with the color corrections available there, and the job controls, that's how I'll get a true 2-pass encoding with one start click.. thanks Hakko, it really is simple.
