Hi Doom9-forum,

yesterday I had a big crash while burning a dvd at 4x speed, my first blue screen in win2k. I'm not too sure what happened but since then my BIOS wouldn't find both my HD's anymore. I wasn't sure what to do so I though, let the pc rest for a while and then try again (sounds dumb dun'it?) well, to my surprise my primary master HD booted somehow, but the secondary was no where to be seen. I took my secondary HD and tried to let it boot by itself and so on, sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't.

I don't quite remeber what I did in my depressed condition until I had broken an IDE cable, got a new one and had it setup like this when everything booted again:

Pri-Master: Seagate HD on new, but older IDE cable
Pri-Slave: none
Sec-Master: Maxtor HD
Sec-Slave: NEC ND-1300A

Everything seemed to work fine again, just that my Maxtor HD suddenly writes at 3mb/s and reads at 2.5mb/s! as of a benchmark test which i did after I waited ages to copy files to it.

Windows2k had them all under Ultra-DMA...

Now I ask, what to do? Is my HD suddenly broken?

thanks for your support :)

In device manager delete the primary and secondary ide drivers and reboot. then check again? Also read somewhere that both drives on one cable makes the faster drive as slow as the slower device. try putting the 1300a on the slave of primary ide and test speed of maxtor again.

thanks for your reply:)

I have it working again, this is how I've got it set up, and thier performance results:

pri-master: Seagate ~15mbs/~14mbs (write/read speed)
pri-slave : Maxtor ~25mbs/~20mbs (when i had them on two different IDE channels it was about 30/25 or so)

Everything is up and running again. I had the Maxtor setup up as a sec-master and the dvd burner as sec-slave, but then the speed droped again, anyways it works now...case closed:D
