View Full Version : white artifacts on PAL movie using big 3

Hi All,

After having managed to use the decomb.dll in AVS script, I reencoded Titanic in PAL version using the big 3.
BitRateViewer statistics showed that it was an interlaced source, alternate scan type and top field first
Therefore I modified the avs script based on the Doom guide to include the decomb.dll and deinterlaced field.
I modified the AVS script but I did not modified the DoCCE4U settings since Doom9 guide specified to use either their first method (AVS script) or the second one (DOCCE4U settings)
I tried the second one but it did not work. (jerky playback)

After the reencoding, I checked the resulting files in windows media player and although it was not jerky as it used to be without the decomb.dll, when there is motion (whether it is fast or slow), on the edges of the characters or the objects in movement, you can see a sort of white artifact. This artifact follows the shape of the object and is always present at the border of 2 objects.
Imagine a face that is turning left or right and when it is turning you can see a white line/artifact all along the face (at least on the side which is turning)
I don't know if I made myself clear but I hope so :)

any idea ?

Sounds like ghosting. The thing is most pal movie dont need deinterlaceing. Before encoding check the origianl video in dvd2avi and look to see if theres any combing affect. If not its more than likely a progressive film just flag interlaced. This is information i have picked up in this forum.
So i had a look at about 7 -> 8 pal dvds in dvd2avi and the only one that should interlacing lines(combing) was a robot wars dvd.
If it is interlaced as you can see combing just encoding it as interlaced.

I encoded Akira which bitrate viewer,dvd2avi and dif4u said was interlaced, but when i checked the video in dvd2avi there was no combing, so when i encoded it i tick progressive frames and zigzag scanning and it plays fine

Thats my opinion.

@Master Yoda: thanks for that
I opened the movie with windows media player and I could see the comb effect. That's why I used the decomb.dll in the AVS script
is it possible to use only the decomb.dll without the deinterlacedfield plugin ?

As I said, I tried to use the second method decribed in doom9, i.e encoded it as it is and just tick top field first and untick progressive in DoCCE4U
but it did not work
The video was jerky but the quality was good

It's odd that it's interlaced...

Anyway, you should be able to re-encode in CCE without de-interlacing. Use alternate scan and untick progressive, leave upper field first UNCHECKED.

Upper field first is designed for bottom field first material.

Stupid labelling on the part of CCE I know...
