I have been having problems with many of my video programs with freeze ups and other glitches of late. So I have uninstall all of my codecs and reinslling various ones with no success. I tried the latest FFDShow codec and the players ran fine except VirtualDub and TMPGE does not. I get the error on all of my AVI files when trying to play them: "Could not find decompressor for format 'DX50' (unknown. VirtualDub requires a Video For Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video...." The thing is I cannot find the right VFW codec anywhere. I have also loaded AC3 filter and XVID filter.
Can anyone help?

DX50 is DivX 5.0. The package should come with vfw codec. You can also try if ffvfw does the job.

This is the first time I have this error using Virtualdub in the two years I've used it. I'm trying to understand this. Are you saying FFDShow package or Divx 5 codec comes with VFW codec? How does the VFW files look like? This is what I am using.
VirtualDub 1.4.10
FFDShow 20030523
AC3 codec
Power DVD
TMPGE
WinME
error message: "Could not find decompressor for format 'DX50' (unknown. VirtualDub requires a Video For Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video...."
Alternate setup:
VirtualDub 1.4.10
DIVX 5.05 Bundle
Power DVD
TMPGE
WinME
error: "Cannot find audio......"
Where can I find 'if ffvfw' file you mention and what is it? Thanks for your help.

Do you have DivX installed right now, or only ffdshow? If I remember correctly, ffdshow is only a directshow decoder. If that is all you have on your system, you don't have a vfw codec installed, and you will have to install DivX or something else.

I have already tried DIVX codecs with these combinations as well to no avail:
Alternate #2:(error with VDub):
Divx 3.11
Divx4.12
Divx 5.02
AC3
Alternate #3: (glitch with Windows Media Player & error in VDub):
NemoCodec50build7
ALternate #4: (error in VDub and Windows media Players):
FFDShow20030523
FFVFW Codec
All versions of VDub give the same error. I ran different AVI clips with same bad results.

Alternate setup:
VirtualDub 1.4.10
DIVX 5.05 Bundle
Power DVD
TMPGE
WinME
error: "Cannot find audio......"
That one worked fine, well for the video anyway, which your post is about.

My goodness. I found the problem was due to an incomplete installation of DIVX3.11 alpha codec. When installing the program, it went through the normal installation setup and later brought a dialog box with 5 icons. I usuall close the box (like I do for all programs thinking it's done installing) but this time I click onto an icon that said "Click here 1st". Then it installed the codec. :o VirualDub works fine now.
