Hello.
In winMe, suddenly this VDub (v 1.5.1) Error cropped up when I attempted to open a DivX .avi:
"Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'DX50' (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video For Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."
What do I do? [Is this related to the recent DirectX upgradation (to v9.0) that I did from WindowsUpdate?]
I have DivX 5.05 installed, and my DivX plays in WinMe.
Regards.

Do you have the newest version of xvid installed? That should fix it.
I believe the 3vix codec should also work but I am not sure.
This has nothing to do with the directx 9 update unless that unregistered non-directx codecs (which wouldn't make any sense).
you could also try just reinstalling divx, if you haven't already.

I'll install XviD, uninstall and reinstall DivX, and see what happens. I'll report my findings.
Beats me, though, what's it got to do with XviD because I've never used XviD before [I'm not sure what the advantages are over DivX regarding picture quality and ease of use]. I've done nothing to induce the error message. In fact, just the day before I had finished a nice DivX encoding of Goldeneye with GKnot. It came out fabulously.
[I'm always interested in the 'why' part of everything. Not sure it's a good trait.]

Maybe the fourcc is wrong.
I change "DX50" to divx

Does your observation mean the program actually can't locate DivX 5.0 codec and erroneously put up the message as DX50 ? Then maybe, as Asmodian suggested, I should reinstall DivX. But why, then, my DivX movies play in DivX players and also in WMPlayer? Can I just set the path to the codec in VDub? How does one do that?
I have downloaded 'AviC.zip' from the link in your mail. Beg pardon for sounding dense, but is it something to solve my problem with? What does it DO ?

mhh
As I know the information in the FourCC tells the player what codec to use and when "DX50" isn't linked to DivX it can't find the right codec.
With the program you can change it to "Divx" so the player knows it is divx.
But I don't know if it solves your problem.

As to why DivX could play in WMPlayer but not Vdub, it is because wmplayer uses direct show and vdub uses vfw. The direct show filter for playing divx will not help for opening in vdub. There isn't anything wrong with reinstalling Divx 5, just try it :)
There are ways to manually set which codecs (vfw and direct show) are registered for use (and their relative preferences), but not in vdub - it is somewhat complicated and it is usually easier to just reinstall the problematic codec.

I've uninstalled my DivX 5.05 Pro, and reinstalled it. Now the problem is solved.
