Has anyone seen Instantcopy 8 available in English? I go to Pinnacle's site and only see 7.1.1 available at this time...
Has anyone tested version 8 ?

@geffroman: The german press release tells that there will be an upgrade program for Instant Copy but they do not talk about details.

I did and I got hits, Either way dont take it the wrong way, no offense, its just the thread,"Instantcopy new version in the works" has been on the initial "One Click DVD backup solutions" page since aug 18th and there was also another one called ,INSTANTCOPY8, which just fell off.

I made a backup of my Two Towers I got today with IC8 - it took 97 minutes and messed up the chapter menu - only shows chapters 1-4 on-screen even when you choose other chapters off the menu.
The quality of the movie is very good though.
FYI, I used DVD Shrink V3B5 earlier and menus and quality are just as good (IMHO).

Hade the same when I burned from IC's virtual drive to my burner with RNM 4.5 (Did this twice to be sure it wasn't the media).
I could play from virtual drive with Power DVD, no problems.
When i burned the PDI directly with IC8, everything worked fine.
Very strange

instant copy 8 works good enough for me with movie only backups. the fast mode is allright, nothing to brag about. it is fast tho, like 30 minutes for a 3 hour movie, while the longer method takes about 90 minutes for a 3 hour movie(Casino)
I would only use cce to re-encode if I could get a dvd to author correctly, still haven't figured that out, chapters stutter whenever I make a dvd with cce, so I will stick with ic8 for movie only backups and dvd decryptor for 1:1 backups.

Just ran a test myself with IC8 on fast mode with an NYPD Blue S1 DVD. OK - A big test for sure considering it's size. :D
Compared to the results of both DVD Shrink & DVD2one the IC8 fast mode result was awful and..... not that fast! :p
OK, anybody with any sense is not going to backup a 7-8 GB disc using this method and use either the normal long-route IC8 method or CCE but for me it was interesting to see how it compared against the rest of the "fast boy" pack quality wise. Sadly pulsations & pixilations galore.

I just tried IC8 on CSI disc one which was 7.3GB, and it took 4 hrs !!
The quality was great, but is it really sposed to take that long???
Running it on an Athlon 1.2GHz with 512MB RAM.
(Also tried it on my P4 2.4GHz laptop, and after 30 mins, it still said 450 mins left !! So i cancelled.
You guys mention 90 mins for a movie. What spec machine?

I tried installing Instant Copy 8 and it messed my burning program Nero 6, it started throwing coasters left , right and centre with 'error in block addresses!'. However that was fixed after uninstalling InstantCopy8! Looks like a confliction between these two softwares.

balks,
Did you use a separate drive for the destination? This speeds up things greatly.
I rip to one drive and reencode on the other. On a P4 2.4 it takes 1 to 1.5 hours.

jfcarbel,
Aha. I used the same drive (two different partitions). And the drive is very full of crap, so i should probably reformat at some point.
That might have been the problem then. Coz 4 hrs is just ridiculous.
Thanks

there's no real need for PDITOOL now as you can use InstantDrive as the source and this gives you access to the files immediately after processing as it automatically mounts the PDI image, so if you wanna use any burning software or modify a few files you are able too :)
p.s. I didn't realise there were this many Beta testers :p

good points though not everyone has Alcohol 120% or a virtual drive program. Also the simplicity of choosing the InstantDrive as the destination will be OK for 99.99% of users, so no need even for DVDDecrypter and creating a mds
I just wish there was an option to output to VIDEO_TS :)

When I installed IC8 and DriveImage it created a virtual drive immediately.
I started DriveImage , selected the PDI file and now it created another virtual drive which has nothing in it.
What am I doing wrong?
By the way, I have removed the virtual drive of the .pdi with DriveImage but there are still two virtual drives.
What's this all about???
[EDIT] I am an idiot!
I guess it's at transcoding time that I have to set the destination to VirtualDrive, right?

I know most people don't like the size issue with IC7. In my case I have only seen one movie that came back at less than 4GB(most recent Star Trek). Otherwise IC7 has always delivered above 4.15GB which I can live with.
My real problem with the program is that it messes up menus and in some cases it causes premature chapter jumps.
NYPD Blue 2nd Season - causes pixel blocks of incorrect data after end of episode just before returning to menus.
Life of David Gale - After movie plays will not display buttons of menu, just shows video from proper menu and NO BUTTON text. Same menus work properly before movie is played.
Le Femme Nikita 1st Season, Disc 5, Episode 2, Chapter 2 - Shows a green pixel block in upper left corner of screen and jumps to chapter 3 prematurly. You can reverse play up to this area of the data and press play to watch the rest of chapter 2. Something is corrupt in the data and causes a jump to chapter 3 even though chapter 2 is all there.
Dark Angel 1st Season - Forget which disk and episode but same issues as Nikita above.
These isses force me to use SHRINK which does a perfect job on all menus and navigation. But Episodic DVDs need InstantCopy's coding quality as compression is typically 35% to 40%.
Has anyone else seen these problems and does anyone know if IC 8 has addressed them?

mmm... maybe i'm wrong but after few test I can see that:
1. the final size is not accurate as we would like to be
2. if I strip some titles, than I can't burn the new dvd because all the video_ts.ifo's infos are messed up (so I have to manipulate al little bit some value)
3. the quality is always great :)
BUT... I've installed the v.8 over an installed v.7 and I dunno if all the hidden settigs "discovered" with the reg files are being used by v.8
MackemX
3rd September 2003, 19:31
my latest 2 tests using my own reg tweaks were both just short of 4.37Gb by a few MB's :D. It took about 20-25 minutes to analyse both with the settings I have at the minute and although I could analyse more if I needed, that may not necessarily result in a bigger PDI file as it can also result in a smaller file as I have discovered in the past
so really I have no reason to complain about the sizing issue at the minute as it's very accurate for me (even the 2.35:1 has improved greatly)
@Lazza, you doing the complete DVD or movie only?. At least it's consistent and seeing as it has a 2% default safety margin along with other default settings then this may explain the shortfall
@leopardone don't worry about IC7 settings as they don't affect IC8 and I'll pass on the title stripping

When you consider that cheap DVDs have their greatest problems at the outer edges due to excessive vibrations... and knowing that IC7 or IC8 doesn't use that space... consistently getting 4.1GB aint so bad... Actually it might be a blessing...

I only tried one which would always get around 3.5Gb but when I tried it again it came out at 4.24Gb
that may still seem to be undersizing but I had default settings which has a 2% safety reserve and default analysis
IC only aims to fill 4.32Gb @default so if you take off 2% off that it gives you about 4.23-4.24Gb
if I did it again using modded settings, I guess it would be a lot nearer to 4.37Gb
so like I said, I'm getting some good results :D

4th September 2003, 16:20
My "solid" (I guess around 250 MB) undersize was with Gladiator but since you say that IC7 settings don't affect IC8 then it's all explained by the 6% default value for DVDSaveQuality parameter which is very accurate with 6% of 4.37 being 256 MB.

1. I cannot comment about my standalone as I do not have my fussy Sony anymore (because it was fussy!) and my new one plays anything (even 12" vinyls!) but IC does now accept it's own work so that's a good sign and PowerDVD playback works OK
2. none so far, all around 4.37GB
3. 2.35:1 black bar issue seems to be fixed
4. Hidden Settings do work for IC8 but you need to do it manually but IC7's do not
5. Hidden Bonus - I have found a way that I can crop bits of the movie with a minutes work :) (still undergoing testing to fully understand it)

LOL - You make a good point there! :)
Well Mackem's little tweaks definately work for sure, after 3 movies done with them the lowest size .pdi file I've got so far is 4.27GB (Narc - Movie only) I don't know about you guys but with IC 7 when update 3 was released they promised a major speed improvement, many asked where it was when they tried it out and I was one of these. Just did not make a difference for me.
IC 8 though has been a different bag altogether, I'm sure you will notice the improvement in the speed area. And with the editing hack and the VIDEO_TS folder all in the works and of course ICHSE support for v8 things are looking fantastic for the future of this soft!

I think I'll probably stick with DVDShrink 3 beta until a final release of IC8 (hopefully with bugs ironed out) comes out. It is slightly worrying how many people are coming out with bugs.

the official release will probably be a different version so I wouldn't worry about the bugs people are reporting and if it does have bugs I'm sure someone will come up with a workaround anyway
the main issue I had with IC7 was the sizing, especially the 2.35:1 undersing but this seems to have improved greatly in the new version and I'm sure the next InstantCopy Hidden Settings Editor will be a great help also
So apart from my slight hiccup regarding Nero, I don't have any issues with IC8 and I'm happy with it. I quite like the fact I can edit the IFO's just a touch to trim bits I don't want as IC is the only program that allows the dirty Ifoedit's and also allows you to replace VOB's of your choice in some cases :D

Is there any major UI improvement with IC8???. How I would wish for a DVDShrink-like interface, so.o.o intuitive with the auto-preview. OR BETTER, may be DVDShrink will advance to the quality even higher than IC, someday I hope I hope, cause its FREE! :D

So is this version (8.0.0.0251) considered "safe to use"? Ie will it introduce compatibility issues with standalone players, chapter/menu bugs etc?
I've just done a backup of Catch me if you can (which is 1.85:1 widescreen by the way) and the filesize came out at 4.26 GB which is pretty good compared to the encodes I did with IC7 (on different films, but they all came out at less than 4 GB).
MackemX
10th September 2003, 13:51
you never know what will be in the official released version so you can't really comment on compatibility issues just yet and it may also depend on you player's temperament
don't worry either, as there are ways and means around it before and after processing. I have a new theory that may just fix things after that might work but I'll wait for now as I'm playing with other stuff

Maybe I didn't make myself clear. I'm not asking about whether or not there will be any compatibility issues in the final version. I mean are there any known compatibility issues with this one?
Oh, and I've compared the quality of Catch Me if you Can backed up using IC8 vs the DVDShrink 3 version (both using the high quality modes, and both keeping the same extras/sound tracks etc.) and I have to say I find the quality better with DVDShrink. I know this seems to go against popular opinion on the matter, and I guess it's a question of taste to a certain extent. The IC8 version just has much more noticeable macroblocking (especially in areas with a lot of noise/film grain - backgrounds etc.) but maybe keeps a little bit more detail than the DVDShrink version. This is with a compression of 68% on the main movie by the way. It seems that IC8 tries to go too low bitratewise in the scenes it considers "easy" to encode (down to less than 1 Mbps in some scenes) compared to DVDShrink and that is where the quality suffers.
I haven't compared to IC7 though. Do people think IC8 (even though it hasn't been released yet) has better or worse quality than IC7?
Oh, as for speed...IC8 took about 2 hours to do the 140 minute movie plus the menus. DVDShrink took about half the time (both working from an image mounted in Daemon Tools).

I did understand you very well
I just tried to point out in a different way that you are asking about the stability of something that is not available yet and may not reflect the final product
I was also thinking that if you were a beta tester with a legitimate copy then you wouldn't be asking a question about the beta version in the first place. I do know some resellers have also said they have copies
I talk it about it freely now as I hold a legitimate copy but now my answers to IC8 questions or my comments are brief as I'd rather wait until the official version comes out before I start ripping IC8 to bits (just kidding :)) and answering people's problems
I have made some guides that work with IC8 but only the one that works with IC7 I uploaded. I do have other tricks 'n' tweaks that I would like to share but I can't because then the holders of the illegal copies may benefit from it 1st before the genuine IC8 users get a copy
So that's why I said it's best just to wait before you make judgement
I suggest you read this post HERE (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59769#post361839) and read Doom9's response and then decide whether you wish to discuss it further
I quote one of your earlier posts also from less than 24 hours ago, which suggests you have just got a copy

I think I'll probably stick with DVDShrink 3 beta until a final release of IC8 (hopefully with bugs ironed out) comes out. It is slightly worrying how many people are coming out with bugs.
apologies if you do own a legitimate copy which can easily be proved, that's if you would want to prove it, but judging by the amount of people talking about it here and elsewhere, surely all of them can't have legal copies especially judging by some of the questions or comments they post

Pinnacle have always had the safety buffer because of the way IC works
The tweaks I have used reduce these safety margins but then increase the risk of oversizing so in a sense it's best they are left to default to minimize the risk for those not willing to tweak it to the max
the excellent ICHSE program from the MadGuy will do the job with a few clicks which I'm sure will be released within hours of IC8 being released

Can you tell me if there is significant changes in IC8 user interface, anything like auto-preview, single pane criteria select [rather than tabs] ala DVDShrink?.
Thanks.

layout is generally the same as IC7 regarding the title selection screen but it has a few more options due to the extra setting adjusments that have been added
the slider adjusments have also improved as you can now adjust while in automatic mode and always have 4.37Gb, seems like Pinnacle have been reading suggestions as I asked for that ages ago in IC7 :)
the skin has also been changed but I found out that you can change it back to the old one if you ain't too keen on the colour scheme with a simple quick edit ;)
I like IC8 but I liked IC7 whereas some hated it, so I guess some will like IC8 and some won't

I also hope they deliver IC8 with the load F6 saved settings feature fixed. I want to use the batch encoder app they offered.
I hate being at work thinking my computer is sitting there doing nothing for 7 hours after it finishes the first encode I setup before I leave in the morn.
MackemX - I know you were interested in this feature too. Did Pinnacle mention that this might be fixed in the release version of IC8 or is it already fixed?
For those of you unfamilier with the issue - IC will only load the F6 saved settings if you have it default to automatic mode. Which defeats the purpose of saved settings. What I want is to be able to go thru all my DVDs and setup all my compression settings and save them all. Then start a batch utility that loads in a list of F6 settings files from a specified directory and starts trancoding the whole batch one after another. So I can come home and my whole 24 Season 2 is backed up :)

Hi guys,
I got a copy of IC8 the day before yesterday. I thought it was a great software but not after what happened.
I tried to back up my HEAT DVD R2 movies to a DVD-R.
I ripped the movie (DVD Decryptor). Authored it using Ifoedit (Kept only the main movie) and then Transoded it using High quality with IC8.
Till now everyting perfect. I tried it with PowerDVD the quality is great !!!
But now I tried to burn it with IC8 I got an error at the end saying that IC8 can't close the disc session. SHIT!!!. Thats 2.4 Euro thrown to the garbage. I tried to close the session with Nero but no way. although it plays ok on my NEC 1300A but not on any other DVD-ROM or stand alone player.
So I tried to write it on a DVD+RW this time. It manages to close the disc and everything but once I click to see whats on the disc. The disc is EMPTY !!! i.e. I can't see anything on the DISC. what the hell is this now I thought.
So I tried to copy the files from the image created by IC8 using their virtual drive. But it also doesn't work it take like 5 hours to copy 1 BOV file.
So I uninstalled IC8 and continued using Shrink until further notice.
does anyone of you know what the hell went wrong in my system.
I have 2 theories:
1- Maybe conflic with another software probably Nero 6.0.0.15
2- Maybe I am using the wrong ASPI 4.72
Anyhow I appreciatre any comments.

I'm just happy they are giving us a VIDEO_TS folder :D Typical, I always find the hard way to do something first :D
I asked Pinnacle about the skin feature and if an option to enable/disable could be implemented because if you remove the IC8 skin file, IC8 defaults theme of your Desktop
so you could have IC8 looking as daft as THIS (http://www.deano.dsl.pipex.com/backup/Pics/toon.jpg) (this is not my normal desktop by the way :p)
I was told the disable/enable option is in the Programs menu :o so there you go, it's already implemented and as easy as that. There is a skin editor demo available at http://www.link-rank.com/feature.htm that works with the .skn file but I'm happy that you can disable the default skin to fit in with the style of my desktop
there's are a few more tips 'n' tweaks for IC8 but it is also still developing as quite a few more features have been implemented or fixed (thanks for listening to us Pinnacle), which I think is great
If you guys can think of any suggestions, I'll gladly pass them on as Pinnacle may just be able to implement it in the future. I'm all out of ideas at the minute as most of my requests (past and present) are now implemented. Most of the ideas I've seen on this board from other threads along with the other betatesters suggestions have also been implemented so they are listening

The copy of IC8 in web is version 7.5 in the registry.
I tried it on my backup of "End of Days"(RC2), it has 27 totles, the main movie is the last one(#27).
1. If I only choose the movie with menu, I can only get a disc image of 3.9GB, no matter how what you set the %(at 99.5%, the video data is 4.89GB). Though the qulity is good, but I dont want to waste the disk space!
2. the virtual drive works very, very bad. WinDVD 4.11 B36 refused to play, PowerDVD 5.0 works well. But you cannot copy all the files to local hdd, it sucks!
3. the pdi-utility for IC7 dose not work for the new image file. It extract all the small files and the first big vob file, then quitt without reason.

Here are my ideas and feature suggestions:
Slider on preview pane. To seek quickly thru the video rather then just play button, like DVDShrink.
Ability to preview/play audio streams, so I know which ones are the commentaries I want to keep
Ability to clip off the credits from both movies and episode DVDs even if the credits are part of the episode and appear in the same cell. This would save alot of space on TV episode DVDs were the credits appear after each one!
I like the interface of DVDShrink and alot of people brag about it as well, so it would be nice to see a better interface.
Some that should be very easy to implement:
Regarding F6 saved Profiles:
- ability to save project name description in the saved profiles. Might be an option so when you press F6 it prompts you to enter a description and/or file name
- start and end date/time saved in file. So I know how long encode took.

Slider on preview pane. To seek quickly thru the video rather then just play button, like DVDShrink.
As I do alot of episode DVDs.
Anyway to create more space for video is really the key to success for these programs...The better the quality of the final output, the more the users will brag and the more people will buy.

MackemX - Now that IC8 is officially released can you talk about all the features that made it into IC8. There site of course does not go into the details (i.e. does it include VIDEO_TS folder output, etc.)

So, can other users comment about what they see new in IC8 or maybe we should create another thread called "IC8 Released - discuss features here"

don't worry I'm ready every post :)
sorry, I ain't got a clue about testers and anyway they've got me :D, the IC7 Master so do they really need more cooks to spoil the broth? just kidding of course :p
I guess I was just an unoffical beta tester of IC7 as I was forever playing with it and trying to make it work right. I would still have tested IC8 but only later if I wasn't a beta tester now so I'm pleased I was asked so I could give some input into IC8
I suppose the best thing about being a beta tester for IC8 is that I can give direct feedback to Pinnacle regarding issues/ideas instead of having to write 2 page guides on how to fix things or post on the forum like I have previously. This way Pinnacle can do whatever is required before it's publicly released to ensure we are all happy :D
like I've said previously, they have come up with fixes to most of my own issues regarding IC7 and it looks like it's going to be the same with IC8 which is better for all concerned
I can't wait to do some troubleshooting with IC8

Thanks for letting me know this was a known issue...
I did as you suggested, though I cannot confirm 100% success because this time I DID NOT reinstall the Virtual Drive utility (where I suspect the conflict exists). Nor did I allow 'Pinnacle Check' to CORRECT my drivers on start up.
In truth I don't want a program as flakey as Pinnacle produces to create drives and such on my computer. I feel I just spent another $30 US to get a newer version of InstantCopy solely because IC 7 was NEVER completely finished. Software should work 100% before releasing new releases with new features.
Pinnacle has 2 BETA programs, one before the release comes out... and the rest of us who pay to BETA their products.
My Nero works... My InstantCopy 8 is running and I will have many samples in the days to come to speak to its reliability.
I think we all know that they will be history 2 days after a solid competitor hits the market.
Thanks again MACKEMX for the tip...

Pinnacle IC7-8 created pdi files have wrong structure!
Win XP:
When mounting an IC8 pdi file then Daemon Tools 3.4.1 outputs an Address Field error, and doesn't mount.
The developers of Daemon Tools know that problem and have informed Pinnacle month's ago!!! But they didn't fix it.
Pinnacle's Instant Drive doesn't work with XP/XPpro.
IC8: You cannot reduce the size of a big main menu manually. The slider has no influence on it.
There is a better solution: Elby CloneDVD 1.3.9.8. It's fast, generates ISO files and works properly.

by the looks of the demo you can't and the reduction is uniform across the DVD which will hit quality on the main movie hard :(

first let me state that in my opinion instant copy gives you the best video quality. I tried instant copy and shrink 3 beta 5 using Apocalypse now redux and lotr two towers and instant copy is better which can be seen easily.
BUT it has a huge problem. Pictures in some movies like lotr two towers and pianist actually occasionaly TWITCHES (stops for a fraction of a second and than moves on). I reencoded lotr II dozens of times. I tried all different settings. Still it twiches every time at the very same place. At the beginning where frodo and sam first catch golum. I tried dvdshrink and it does not twitch. But instant copy quality is better.
Please anybody out there who can solve this problem?????

What is known about why Instantcopy causes menus to freak? It will display the video for one menu while buttons for a different menu are active.
This seems to happen when there is a comprehensive series of menues such as in Sopranos 4th Season or David Gale
