View Full Version : DVDShrink 3.0 beta 5 Main Movie Compression

I just downloaded beta 5 and tried to do Swordfish R1. I see that automatic video compression is set as default for all titles. Hmmm...pretty cool. Anyway, with Main Movie set as automatic video compression, I chose to keep only the English 6ch and uncheck the the other two. What I notice is that if I uncheck any audioor subs, my movie size goes down and the Extras sizes go up due to automatic compensation. That leaves my movie with a higher compression and smaller size which I don't want. Maybe this is a bug?
Setting it to No Compression, fixes my situation but IMHO, the Main Movie should be set to No compression as default and keep the rest as automatic.

If I want to uncheck audio then I've already un-checked automatic compression.
I don't think its a bug but its a very powerfull tool that gives masses of controll and needs a little getting used to.
It does however crash my Athlon 1Giga/AtiRage/A7V constantly where 2.3 doesn't.
My Athlon 2000+ runs it just fine....

I believe, with everything set to automatic, DVDShrink tries to balance the compression ratios so that everything comes out with roughly equivalent quality.
Comparing ratios is a little bit of an apples and oranges thing. In terms of ending quality, 65% on the extras might be about equal to 58% on the main title, or visa-versa.
However that doesn't sound too much like it applies here. When you unchecked the subs (or was it audio - it isn't clear from your post), did the movie size drop a lot? Did it drop by more than the amount of the deselected asset? Put another way, did the size allocated to video on the main title go up or down?
In my experience, the total size of the main title goes down, but the video size goes up. The difference is then allocated out to the menus and the extras to keep ending video quality roughly in balance.

BTW: I like the way it works. Seems natural to me that DVDShrink should try to balance everything by default.

If you want to get a better quality only on your main movie when you strip audio and subtitle streams, set main movie on automatic and extras on ratio, because when everything is set on automatic DVDshrink distributes the free amount of MB which you gained by removing streams equally.
But leave at least one title (for example Main Movie) on automatic otherwise DVDshrink will not reach the output disk size (4464 MB) properly.

What does DVDshrink do to compress it? For example, TMPGEnc will take the original and re-encode it with an MPEG-2 codec. A 2 hour movie would take 5-6 hours to re-encode.
A VOB is really an MPEG-2 datastream.

DVDshrink does not re-encode it Transcodes which means it further compresses where the original encoder left off. Its very quick on a fast comp - 30 mins for a whole DVD!

I did a video and set the FBI warning to 15% (photo) and it would not work right. The warning did not become visible. The main movie played fine but the movie would not play past the FBI warning. I had to use the MENU button.

reman,
Some players will not play video compressed in Still Pictures mode because the bitrate is too low.
If you would have let your player go, I bet it would have played right through that FBI warning (black screen) to the menu.
Also, try fast-forwarding the segment. The video will probably display...

Hmmmm, the players I have do not like bitrates lower then 500 for VCD/SVCD and 1500 for DVD...though I have not verified DVD at 750 or 1000 etc.
I will try playing it/fast forwarding it. What would be REALLY cool would be an option to replace the VIDEO with an ACTUAL still photo of our choice or a default one that said "sorry, this segment has been removed"

@reman
This is what I do for all my Titles that I select as "Still Pictures". I can use this guide (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=50245) before or after DVDShrink.
