View Full Version : Question about Nero Settings (and IMGTool)

Hello all. I have two quick questions (hopefully), that are somewhat related.
First, burning DVD's in Nero. I really want to use Nero instead of something that burns images directly because of the file verification feature. My question is, what are the proper settings? People have suggested "DVD Video" mode /w ISO Level 1 and no Joliet. This seems to make sense.
The problem is, I want to keep the same DVD labels. This conservative setting seems to strip the labels after 8 characters, much like ISO lvl 1 w/o Joliet does on CD-R's. My question is essentially this : I know switching to ISO level 2 will probably cause many, MANY problems, but is turning Joliet on safe? I know some people have reported Joliet giving them problems, but considering how the ISO/UDF bridge filesystem works this seems counterintuitive. Also, why is there an option have different ISO and Joliet labels? I don't see this option with my CD-R's, and it scares me a little.
The second question reguards IMGTool. Basically, why use it? If nero or <insert fav. program here> has no problems burning DVD's, and you get the file verification feature you do not get when burning disc images, why use another program, and sacrifice even more space on your hard drive? Am I missing something?

Hmm.. ImgTool Burn needs installed 293kB, I hope this is no real sacrifice for you...
You have asked for best settings in Nero? Use ImgTool Burn and you don't need to ask this questions. The default settings in ImgTool Burn 1.00.7 are everything you need. ... and ImgTool also accepts Volume Label up to 32 characters. Nevertheless everything is set for you in the default settings, you can change some important things.
My suggestion is Nero 6.0.0.11 (or better) and ImgTool Burn 1.00.7.
The easiest way is: try it out. ImgTool is freeware and the uninstall routine will clean up your system so you don't need to sacrifice anything...

Ok, ImgTool Burn looks significatnly different then the last time I tried ImgTool. I don't have a dvd burner on the computer I am typing this reply on, but from the little messing around I did I have two questions :
1. How do I add a JACKET_P folder for the "thumbnail" info? If the .nrg file ImgTool keeps asking me to save (but for some reason refuses to save) is supposed to be loaded into Nero, well, that answers this question.
2. Will this allow me to do file verification? If not, the my question as originally posted still stands . . .

You can simply create a JACKET_P dir beside your VIDEO_TS dir, put your mp2 files into that dir. If you look into the included help you can find a small description in the apendix part. This dir will be included into the DVD.
The normal way to create a DVD using ImgTool Burn is to choose the directory and then burn directly to a DVD media. If you have a DVD recorder, it is displayed in the recorder drop down box.
But you can use the image recorder that creates the nrg file. This file could be loaded into the Nero ImageDrive or Daemon Tools or something else to check this file.
When refuses the image recorder to save the image?

You know, I really gotta start reading the manuals that come with these things :o Thanks for the pointers. Just want to make 100% sure though, does the latest version of nero5 fix the iso+joliet problem that many people in this forum refer to, or if I choose to use nero5 instead of nero6, do I have to burn disks in "pure UDF"?
BTW, where do you get the latest nero updates anyways? Every link I can find on ahead.de in relation to nero5 is trying to get you to buy nero6, which I would love to do if it would install on this system.

I would suggest you Nero 6. Nero 5.5 has the limitation you have described above.
Just try it. Only some players have problems with UDF/ISO/Joliet bridge format. But as I say above, use Nero 6 and everything should be ok.

I am aware I might sound a bit off-topic, yet I'd like to ask how many characters ImgTool Burn 1.00.7 supports for the dvd volume label. I had the impression it was 32, but I noticed that in my very first dvd copy (yeap, still a n00b in this new fascinating sport, but I'm learning fast...) only the first 16 characters appear. Of course I have not used any spaces, or other funny characters.
Other than that, the movie-only-copy made with DVDShrink works perfectly in both my pc and Pioneer 535 standalone!
ImgTool Burn 1.00.7, Nero 6.0.0.11, WinME (sorry for that... )

ImgTool supports up to 32 characters for volume label. If they are truncated, the API has done this... but I think you can also be happy with 16 chars :D .

Confirmed by Ahead that the UDF volume name is currently limited to 16 characters...
