View Full Version : Odd problems with OGM

Hi!

I have been using OGM to few of my dvd-backups, and everything has worked, except of few problems. They were:

1. Sometimes opening OGM-file to The core media player (RC3) would crash ssh-client (SecureCRT), firewall (BlackIce) and anti-virus software (F-secure).

2. When trying to reboot the computer, it hangs Explorer and I'll have to kill those processes manually, wich is time consuming and annoying.

3. Sometimes the player just hangs permanently and I'll have to kill the process manually.

This didn't occur every time, sometimes everything worked flawlessly. Now, I changed one of my hdd's to bigger and faster and also installed fresh install of Windows XP Professional to new hdd. now I have everything working again, but now OGM-files simply refuse to open in The core media player (RC4). They open in WMP, but then subtitles etc. doesn't work. Now I would like to know possible reasons for this, if anyone has any clue about this. When I open them in CMP and try to fast forward it, it gives error message about crash, looking like this:

The following error occured:
Access violation at address 005CF630 in module 'CorePlayer.exe'. Read of address 00000000

The file's I try to open have been encoded with DVDtoOGM, using Xvid (cbr about 1800 Kbps), ogg-vorbis (48 000, ~256 kbps), chapters and subtitles.

My setup is: AthlonXP 2100+, 512 ddr, 40 gig + 120 gig hdd's, Ti4200 128 mb, 19" and 17" monitors, Windows XP pro + SP1. If someone has any idea how to fix this, please reply, I'm kind of out of idea's. And if there is handy way to convert OGM's to Matroska, it would be also nice to know. Thanks.

Core Media Player is going to be updated to work fine with the new release. Why not try Media Player Classic though which should sort out all your problems for now...

Mosu's mkvmerge might be able to accept OGMs as input, I can't remember. Hopefully one of the matroska team can comment :)

Cheers and good luck,

Did you try with another player ? I never had any problem with ogm, but never I used the core media player, so.

Try Media Player Classic, or BSPlayer, to see if it still hangs.

BTW, you can have subtitles working in WMP, you just need to install VobSub.

Finally, there is a way to convert ogm to matroska : VirtualDubMod ( a little search could have helped ).

[Edit :] I should take less time to type my post :p

I did try WMP, bundled with WinXP, because I don't really want to upgrade to WMP 9 if it's not neccessary. I did try Zoom media player before, but when I opened OGM with it, it made my computer crash and reboot. I do have some subtitle-filters installed, but I'll try something to make this work.

And yes, I could (and should) have searched more, but I didn't really have any idea where I was going to search, so I asked it as part of my ealier post. This has been helpful, thank you. :)

edit: I trien WMP classic, but it didn't open my subtitles and refused to stay fullscreen when I was using other program in my second monitor. But BSPlayer worked out just fine, as long as I don't uninstall CMP, so I guess I'll be using it for a while. Thank you for help. :)

Sure, my pleasure :)

mkvmerge can read OGMs. Accepted tracks are video, audio (all formats that mkvmerge itself understands) and that simple text subtitle format.

For the MPC not satying in fullscreen, it may come from the nvidia's driver. Dual head makes behavior of fullscreen applications a little strange. For me ( with the latest driver ), only application on the secondary screen can stay fullscreen.

For the different crashes you're experiencing, you might try to deinstall CMP, and all the filters you've installed. Then reinstall them ( not CMP though, you should wait for a new version ). I can't promise you it will work, but I think it's worth trying.

I was thinking it was something with the players, because some of them work ok in fullscreen when I'm using other programs in my second monitor. It might be driver issue also, I did swear a lot when configuring dual monitors. This will propably be my last nVidia card, if they don't improve their drivers. I was almost ready to invest €360 to Matrox Parhelia, but finally got things working, so I didn't have to miss my visit to docktor. :)

I haven't had any crashes with BSPlayer, so problem seems to be solved for now. I was first thinking that there was something weird in OGG-filters, because Zoom Player crashed my computer and CMP crashed some applications sometimes. BSPlayer however works perfectly with OGM's, no crashes, no odd behaviour, so I guess that CMP and that version of Zoom had some problems. I only have to keep CMP installed, because BSPlayer simply doesn't open OGM's if i uninstall it. MPC and WMP both refuse to work in fullscreen if I intend to use other programs, but BSPlayer should be enought for me until updates version of CMP at least. Thanks again for help. :)

CMP brings it's own version of the OggDS filters with it. By uninstalling CMP, you uninstall OggDS as well - so you can't open OGMs anymore.

Just go to http://tobias.everwicked.com/ and fetch oggDS 0.9.9.5 (well, the latest available there i mean), and install them after uninstalling CMP. Then everything should work fine again.

I hope this helps,
