Compatibility between dvd-r and dvd-players

I was searching the net for some information related to this topic, but I couldn't find what I'm looking for...
Is there a way to know if the dvd-r I burn with my dvd-recorder drive could be played by certain dvd-player model?

First, I placed my post in the wrong forum. Sorry, it was a mistake.
Well, then, I found really interesting that free service offered by DVDHelp site, but I do not find the answer there.
From some friends, which were burning DVD-R's since a year ago, I know Ritek DVD are from which you can get the highest degree of compatibility with dvd players. And it's said on all over the net. But I know too, they didn't try their DVD's on several DVD players.

Do you know why dvd-r manofacturers do not provide this kind of information? Why they do not specify with which dvd players models are 100% compatible?

Perhaps I'm missing something... Sorry if my questions are stupid...
