I was looking for the Simpsons THX clip and a friend posted it for me to download but changed the filename to data.dat (posted it on a server at work and wanted a non-suspicious name). I downloaded the file and it plays great on powerdvd but can't be joined with other vobs using vobedit --> join clips. It seems that vobedit doesn't think that this clip is vob. Other than changing the file name is there anything else I can do?

You should familiarize yourself again with the forum rules, especially #6. I wouldn't be suprised if this thread gets locked/deleted.

But your file in question, *.dat, is a VCD file. *.VOBs are DVD files. These are definitely "oranges and apples". PowerDVD can play .DATs and .VOBs.
