I've spent the best part of this day sorting out the challenges of VobEdit and IFOEdit (starting from almost zero), for the merging of VOB files back into 1 DVD.
(background: my kids scratched their 'toon DVD and it stopped playing in the middle, but I found that only about 20sec where damaged)
Using DVD Shrink 2.3, I cut the movie from start up to the damaged position, and then the rest of the movie, starting a bit after the damaged position.
I then used VobEdit and IFOedit to put the 2 VOBs back together, and here's my recipe for dummies (such as me) that allowed me to get the kids back in front of the TV. I guess this could be helpfull to other newbies, as it summarizes the main knowledge found all over this forum:

1.)
Rename all the *.VOB you want to join to:

"VTS_01_001.VOB"
"VTS_01_002.VOB"
"VTS_01_003.VOB"
etc.

2.)
Copy all of them into the same folder!!

3.)
Start "VobEdit" and open the first of the new VOB files "VTS_01_001.VOB"

4.)
Select "Edit" - "Join Clips" in "VobEdit",
it will ask for "VTS_01_1.VOB" to be saved, select (save into) same folder as above.

5.)
Program will then ask "First VOB-ID", just say "OK" to use ID 1.

6.)
New VOBs will be created, named
"Vts_01_1.vob"
"Vts_01_2.vob"
"Vts_01_3.vob"
etc.

7.)
Then use "IFOedit" to create the corresponding IFOs and the DVD Video Manager files "Video_ts.ifo" and "Video_ts.vob" and the menu files "Vts_01_0.ifo" and "Vts_01_0.vob".
"IFOedit" automatically recognises the number of VOBs in the set.

8.)
Click once on "Video_ts.ifo" in the main window and go to the "Audio" property, double click on it and set "Audio attributes" - "Language" from "Not specified" to "English"
Do the same for "Vts_01_0.ifo".

9.)
Click on button "Get VTS sectors" in the bottom menu. This will correct sector addresses in all IFO files.

FINISHED...

A nice short guide, cant do much better than that.
I am interested in how you isolated the damaged portion?. Were you able to read the damaged disc wholy into your hard disk and then ran DVDShrink preview to locate the damage in the .VOB?

Small tip :

If the CD or DVD is scratched on the underside it can be polished out so the laser can read through it again.

Use ultra fine abrasive paper to reduce the scratch and then use chrome / brass polish to buff it up afterwards. Even Tooth Paste can work wonders!

If its scratched on top youve had it.

maa: I'll certainly try that out, as my kids ruin DVDs almost every single day.

voo_doo99:
you are right, I'm just thinking about that now.
The one I "rescued" was a "original" DVD without copy protection.
They sold them cheaply in Shanghai..
Won't work with actual DVDs, but the point I wanted to bring along was an easy guide on how to merge multiple VOBs.
By now I also think that the damaged/scratched part could be left out by using DVD Shrink and cut the movie twice, this way you would not end up with 2 VOBs to merge in the first place.
