View Full Version : PAL or NTSC user identification

I've noticed that a lot of members don't appear to want to post where they live. Well each to there own... I guess!
So how about having a little area (below the location), that can be used to identify a members 'regional colour system'. You know, PAL or NTSC?
Might be useful.

Interesting point. When I first registered and for quite a while I did stated where I live (as well as my occupation, home page and such stuff).
With time I got the feeling that using a more creative place name was cooler. :)
Maybe same thing happened to other people.
Or perhaps they are afraid to reveal more of their personal data. Maybe they think this site is considered "dangerous" or "under observation" by some authorities or copyright holders, which may have no good feelings about the technology learned here.
Who knows? Maybe a poll could be started on "why you'd rather not reveal you real world location".
Anyway, everybody chooses a cool nickname (or attempt to). Almost no one uses his/her real name (believe it or not, I do. And yes, from long before George Lucas copied me).
Another curious thing is that you seldom see girls here (or at least a clear indicator of their gender).
A community like this is very interesting to analyze, sociologically speaking. Rule abiders, rule breakers, gurus with poorly designed GUIs, knowledgeable persons willing to share their know-how for free, arrogant newbies, trolls, ignorants unaware of their status, people who can write but cannot understand what they read, newbies that get exited when they give another step and it works!, talented programmers writing machine code to get a 2% speed improve on a new chipset, etc.
Interesting indeed. Mankind in a nutshell.

Oh dear. My appologies to our SECAM friends!
I was too busy thinking about DVD and DV camera colour systems. And forgot about the 'transmission' systems.
Anybody remember the French (SECAM) exploits using 819 lines?

IMO it is not important to know wheather someone uses PAL or SECAM, since it is only the color that is transferred by another kind of modulation.
PAL and SECAM are Black/White compatible.
And working with PAL or SECAM - digitized video on PC makes NO difference, because resolution and framerate are the same.
IMO an user-option for NTSC/PAL will be enough.
more precisely would be a option wheather the user has a TV-Standard with 60Hz or with 50Hz, because some countries have a PAL-NTSC-Mixed TV-Standard (NTSC-like 60Hz, but PAL Color-Transferring)
EDIT: Anybody remember the French (SECAM) exploits using 819 lines?
There has been three different resolution-standards in past. All had been 50 Hz.
405, 625 and 819 lines.
405, was common in UK,
819 in Belgium & France,
625 in the rest of Europe.
To get ONE Standard, 405 and 819 were kicked out and 625 (the middle of both, hehe) was taken.
btw.:
I've never seen a Capture-Device, that could handle a 405 or 819 standard.
And I've never seen a 405 or 819 - picture myself.
Please do correction, if I am wrong with this.

we already have a location field in the user options, which is shown to the left of each post you make. But what you put in there is up to you and I don't think we should force people to reveal their whereabouts. Furthermore, living in Europe doesn't automatically mean that if you post, you want help with a PAL problem. I have more than 300 DVDs, and more than half of them are NTSC..

Hi Doom9,
Thanks for the reply. So how about changing 'Location' to 'Location/Color System' then?
I think some of the guys on the 'Capturing and Video Editing' section may find it useful. As they seem to ask the question quite a bit!
Cheers

I'm in a PAL country/area, but I'm also interested in NTSC. I had some conversions to make, even captured from NTSC VHS tapes.
So, whole idea looks me as unuseful. DVD's - about 1/3 is NTSC...

Not to mention fansubbers who deal with NTSC all the time, whether they like it or not :).

The idea of adding information about a user's 'color system' is to help 'newbies', in the main.
It's not supposed to be for those people who consider themselves as being 'intermediate' or 'experts' users. As such users already understand how helpful it is to mention which camcorder or DVD format they are using and/or want to tranfer to!
It was just a suggestion!
