A lot of people are telling me to switch from 4.12 to 3.11 so I would like to try it.
I am running windows xp, can i create a new user profile and just load 3.11 to there? I don't wish to have to delete 4.12 from my pc.
And yes I have tried divx 5.x and I don't like it.

use tools like gknot or fairuse for that
I don't wish to have to delete 4.12 from my pc.it should be possible to install both divx3 and divx4 on the same system...
And yes I have tried divx 5.x and I don't like iton this board most people have the opinion that divx5 and xvid are far superiour than divx4
The FOURCCs of 3.11 and 4.12 are different, so I suppose the system would not complain or mess up if you have both codecs installed (no need to create another profile).
If you want to use 3.11 for encoding, try Nandub.

well, he may try it, read some guides, and eventually like it ;-))
just listed possibilities...

I often had problems when I installed both codecs...
my procedure for this was :
1. uninstall everything
2. install 3.11
3. install 4.12 and say "no" when he asks you if you want to use DiVX 4 to read all DiVX-related content
4. give XViD and ffdshow a try and go back to point 1. :D

Thanks for the replies. What's this about me not having the skills to encode with nandub? Is nandub better than vdub? Let's assume I build clips for dumb sales people who don't want divx 5 or xvid ffshow on their pcs. I am happy with the results so far with 3.11.
Are there any tips for optimizing settings for 3.11? I have varied the bitrate from 1000-2000 kbps. Some of these guys are in hotels with dial-up. I would like 2 minute clips with good qual + sound and file sizes below 15mb. That is my goal.
currently i use divx 3.11 with vdub alongside the following filter queue.
smart de-interlace 2.7 beta (blending)
resize (bicubic 512x384)
smart smoother 1.1 (3,26)
hue/sat/intense 1.2 sat 1.26
crop 8x8x6x6 to 496 x 372
It works well providing there is not a lot of movement or it isn't outdoors. Outdoors just blows. Horribly pixelated unless I boost bitrate to 2500 .
Anything else to try?

About nandub:
Nandub is a clone of VDub, not in development any more. According to most of the people around it's still the best tool for 3.11 encodes. Setting up Nandub for good quality encodes is said to be a "hard" job. There are good guides around, look in doom9.org for probably the best one.
About the quality:
The source size also matters for the "good" settings - for example if you have ~40 MB source to be encoded down to ~15 MB(~3 times size reduction), you'll probably have a good quality encode. If your source is ~100 MB and you target ~15 (~7 times size reduction), the final result will probably suck.
If you have darker colors in the source, you'll get better compression without quality loss also (indoors vs. outdoors).

What you said about filesize is not really exact.
It's an easy approach,
but it not exactly how it works.
You need to consider the source bitrate.
Or the clip duration...
if you have a 220mb file for 25 min (typical 'hq' raw)
with 128kbit audio.
That means you have probably an average drf of 2,
no matter the codec used.
This base, considering divx3.11 alpha being used,
you can:
* filter to clean out the noise.
* filter to correct specific problems
That in order to gain compressibility,
or sometimes the reverse.
* use drf 2 to 4 when encoding,
meaning you'll reduce the global filesize.
you can do 220-->175 mb fairly most of the time.
For some specific encode (eg: Witch Hunter Robin anime),
with dark part, you can do 150mb-->100mb easily since the source compress better.
And most of the time if you add subtitle and use a non 'hq' raw,
you can do 130-->175 :)
Of course if you plan to reduce filesize of raw by 7, the result will look scary unless you have non compressed or lowless raw.
And of course if you plan to produce divx3.11 content
nandub is the way to go, since it was designed to take out
the flaws of the codec, with some success sometimes.

PS: nandub rc2 dev is 'halted',
at least for the global algorithm used.
some people are working on different versions,
mainly fixing or adding features to it (eg Vax version; see others post in this forum).
There a nandub by undercut (www.undercut.org) that exists too,
designated for one pass encoding.
Some versions seem to use just the name of nandub (aka the russian version called 'nandub3' without sourcecode and using another codec...)
I did myself some corrections // tweaks // modifications on nandub rc2 too, (esby.free.fr), modifying mainly the antishit algorithm.
PS2: about switching 4.12 to 3.11 ...
you can switch to : sbc (nandub), divx5.X and xvid actually.
You'll probably get better result in all cases.

divx or xvid, the easiest solution for playback (and perhaps the best one, as well) is ffdshow : these "dumb sales people" can install ONE filter to decode ANY movie material they can find (including DiVX 3,4 & 5, MPEG, XViD and so on...)
that's a true "dumb sales people" solution !
for encoding, it's a matter of personal taste... the problem with DiVX 3.11 is that it's an old codec, a buggy codec, whose development stopped years ago... anyway, its crispness is quite enjoyable, and I used to love it quite a lot ;)
