I have a Panasonic Portable DVD Player (L-50 model). I have made many backup movies and they play fine on my Sony home DVD player. However, when I use my portable, it plays OK for about 10-15 minutes. Afterwards, it starts to pause and the video slowly fades out and gets distorted until it's not viewable. I think it may be because the portable gets very hot. I use Ritek DVD-R's. Anyone having similar problems with a portable?

Yes, the portables are more fussy with backup. I got more picture break-ups and lock-ups on my Audiovox 1680, usually associated to cheap media or bad burn. Now, I use it for quality control. If the backup plays well there, it will be good most everywhere.

This must be the first time I hear of Riteks giving trouble... Sorry for my question, but you are sure they are Ritek, aren't you ???
A second question; how do you burn them?
I always make an ISO image with Maestro or the (old) Image tools and burn it with Decrypter. Some people have problems when they burn the ifo/vob/directory files directly... Try this way if you dont do it and let us know... This is a very worrying issue.
Latsly; do *all* of your Ritek backups give trouble or, say, half??
Good luck,

Ritek is the absolutely BEST media I have used!! They play well in my home DVD players (Sony, Apex), but I have the problem with my portable. I think it may be the heat (that little sucker can get real hot when you use it!)
I normally do Movie only with DVD2One, Version 1.20. Sometimes I use DVD Shrink if I can do the whole movie without compressing or with very little compression.
I think I will sit the player on something cold (ice bucket, etc.)and see if that helps.
Thanks ALL for the input.

I had a similar problem with a CD playing divx, the cabinet was not properly ventilated. Putting some space above the CD-ROM (moving it down one slot) and rerouting cables so they didn't restrict airflow solved it.
Out of self-preservation CD-ROM and DVD-ROM readers shut down when they get too hot.
I don't know what you can do about a portable, there's not much room for airflow to begin with, or places to add fans.

Heat eh? ... interesting.
Talking about RITEK quality, I just remembered something stupid I did last week. After I burned a Ritek disk, I tried it on my standalone player and... nothing!! Then my PC player gave me the same trouble: no playback. (This reminded me some x2 DataSafe (not the Ritek)I bought sometime ago which were even CRC-failing on data in my PC).
Then I got so very much pissed off, I totally abused the disk  : I bent it so much until it started changing colour!!, I scratched it, I threw it to the floor, the bin, etc. To cut a long story short, I finally realised I had ticked the "test mode" of the Decrypter by mistake :D :D :D :D :D :D
Nevertheless, I dared to burn it. It was as fine as all the others...
Ritek rock!!!

Well, at least you didn't put it in upside down.

i am experiencing some strange problems with my audiovox dvd in a bag... i can make a copy with dvdxcopy and it works fine in this machine... when i make a copy using dvd decrypter, dvd2one, and record now max it doesn't work on the audiovox... however, it works fine on my other stand-alone players
I think the machine is getting old and fussy, but why will it read the dvdxcopy and not the dvd2one copy? i am using ritek media for both burns... do you guys have any suggestions?

mj, I own that exact same portable DVD player (I love it) and I've been using nothing but Riteks in it, with no problems. I take it on the road when I travel worldwide, with a boatload of DVDs and none have ever caused errors, skips, or pauses. I had some that were recorded on Princo and the darn thing wouldn't even spin up! Even TDK's were a problem. The only media it likes are Riteks and Pioneers (and I'm not shelling out the extra $$ for Pioneers when the Riteks work great).
