I have recently installed numerous encoding and authoring software (AVE2SVCD, Cinema Craft Encoder 2.5 (Software bundle), AC3Machine) and now when I try to launch DVDXCopy Xpress I get an error message on screen saying "Program cannot work with SoftICE loaded".
Have have searched all the faq's for any mention of SoftICE but cannot find any mention of it.
Has anyone ever come across this error message?

Sounds like you know about SoftICE but I can't understand what you are saying. Is SoftICE a "debugger" whats that? Can it be deleted? And why do you need a "debugger" if you are running shareware? I wasn't aware I was running any shareware.
Also you say I can hide SoftICE if I want to hide it. Why would I want it if it is stopping me using DVDXCopy? Whaty does it mean to "hide" it?
Sorry to go on but your reply has given me more questions than answers!

SoftICE is a system debugger widely used by (dark- ;))crackers to remove copy protections / limitations from software.
I don't think you've installed it actualy, it's rather a badly coded protection sheme in DVDXCopy. Don't know what you can do, maybe you should contact the author directly.

Thanks for that Zulu.
The thing is, I was able to run DVDXCopy Xpress And DVDXCopy (Which are both installed) before I installed a load of DVD encoding/authoring tools.
Does this mean that this DRYIce problem might have been caused by a cracked copy of, say, CCE?

No, but it's possible that there is a program/service on your system that has some softice alike characteristics and is misleadingly perceived as a system debugger.
"dead" programs are out of question, only active programs, those resisting in memory while DVDXCopy is running can cause this problem.

Aaaaahhhhhhh I see.
So would you suggect I fire up my Task manager and disable services one at a time till I can get DVDXCopy to launch?
If so, how would I go about preventing this service from launching again?

Trial and error doesn't hurt :)
If you're running a NT based system don't forget to shut down services (in the service manager), too.

I had the same problem when I tried to install it. As you said, it is one of the services being misunderstood as the Debugger.
I did not try further (I only wanted to play with it anyway; only use IC7 for fast copies), but I suspect it is my Symantec software
I searched the net for this problem and it seems that some people had problems. One of them (who paid for it!) tried to contact support, but without result...
good luck!

I've tried shutting down as many services as I can but DVDXCopy is still coming up with the same error message. Even tried uninstalling all the software I instlled prior to this problem manifesting itself. Don't know what else to try. Except maybe another DVD back up application. Any suggestions?

I had no success either; tell me whether you have installed:
1) C compiler (MSVC), matlab, etc.
2) symantec antivirus, kerio firewall, remote access, network utilities, etc.
3) latest WinXP updates, Service packs etc.
4) anything else you may think it causes teh problem...
The DVDXCopy development team have messed up big way, but in any case abandon the attempt this utility is not the best you can use anyway.

I am running a fully updated XP and also Norton Internet Security/Antivirus.
So if DVDXCopy is not the best tool for the job, what are these better utilities you mention? Ive heard DVD Shrink mentioned and also DVD2One? What are your views on this?

So do I. You can switch/uninstall the Norton stuff, but not the XP updates :D
As for the better tool, InstantCopy ver.7 (IC7) gives better results. I use this for quick copies. But using dvd2dvd-r (which is full encoder as it uses CCE) gives usually even better quality for longer movies. Mind that the later is much slower.
Read a few threads in the current forum. In any case, do not mess up your installation just because of the over-paranoid team of DVDXCopy who tried to avoid inverse engineering of their product in a *really* clumsy way... Not everything is SoftICE :scared:

I had that happen to me once, search for a file name amdfix.sys (I think thats it, I'll know when I get home if thats the correct name) and renamed to amdfix.old Reboot and your problem should go away. If not it's something else. There are other remedies, just tell me if this one solves your problem. Good luck.
