Hi Guys- i'm new to ripping/encoding/burning etc...... so if this has already been covered i apologise.
I've used DVD Shrink to copy some dvd's now.... and does anyone know why the subtitles autoplay on some movies and not on others....it's a pain having to switch the subs off everytime you watch a film.
Is it down to the settings you use when u rip the dvd- eg: if you leave all subtitles IN.......it will not autoplay subtitles?
Or if you just take SOME subs out....is it then it only autoplays the subtitles?
Sorry if this sounds confusing..but i would appreciate some help.
thnx in advance

I have the same problem on my GF's GoVideo DVD player (I don't remember the model number off hand). It doesn't matter if I only remove some substitles or none at all, the default subtitle still plays.
I don't know if this is a problem with DVD Shrink or my GF's DVD player as I don't get the same problem when played on my Apex or my bro's Bose DVD player. But other people have reported the same problem when using DVD Shrink so it may very well have to do with that software.
My workaround: I remove all subtitles on backups I do for my GF since she doesn't care about subtitles anyway.

Hi Gil.
So it's safe to remove ALL subtitles anyway is it?
If thats all it takes, thats great!!
thnx

the last thing i have read on a similar topic to this said that if you are using dvd shrink to do 1:1 copy with menus, etc then do not remove subtitles or it can cause problems...

I've only done main movie only so I can't comment on the 1:1 copy, but yes I have not had any problem with the backup with all subtitles removed.
I assume there is a little bug here, I've had the same problem and even had Subs show up in ifoedit after removing them in shrink....

I have seen this happen with DVD2one and CloneDVD.
For me Ithink it is the only subtitle stream left after removing the rest and the programs assumes you want it ON by default.
IC doesn't do this.
The only way for me to fix this is to add a precommand to one of the ifo files that turn the subpicture to 0. The crappy part is Clonedvd doesn't put the DVDr in file format for me to get in there and change it.
Any answers out there as to prevent this problem?
I like having subtitles for those late night need to be quiet movie viewings and plus I am a bit hard of hearing too.

Hopefully, DVDShrink ver 2.4 will fix this problem. :)

Shrink at 3.0 beta, now...
How about ForcedSubs...such as those needed for the 'translation' subs in DieAnother... or Dances With...?

If your DVD is under4.3G, rip with DVD Decrypter in ISO mode and burn
with DVD decrypter. You'll get everything you want[menu, subtitle, etc.]
And all the function are working well.

Someone suggested to check the GoVideo DVD player's setup menu to turn off subtitles. Sure enough it was there.. after scrolling down to 50 (okay I'm exaggerating a bit ;)) languages, I finally saw the option to turn off subtitles. The 'Subtitles' selection screen only shows 5 languages at a time so it didn't occur to me to scroll down after the 5th language as there was no icon (like an arrow pointing downwards) to indicate that there were more languages to choose from.
Burrying the 'Subtitles Off' option under 50 different languages is bad programming, if you ask me. but that doesn't change the fact that I blamed DVDShrink for this problem. Shame on me! :o
I'm glad the problem is solved, but I do have one question: Before I turned off the GoVideo's auto-play subtitle mode, why was it that only movies backed up by DVDShrink played with subtitles on? It never happens with commercial DVDs.

In case anyone is wonder, here's the reason why:

The commercial DVD's have commands (prohibitions) that
prohibit the DVD set-top player from doing certain things.
For example, the FBI Warning screen cannot be skipped
or fast-forwarded.
Another example is that Subtitles are suppressed on the
commercial DVDs by default.
When you rip a DVD, all prohibitions are disabled.
You can now fast-forward or skip FBI Warning screens.
But now the subtitles are also no longer suppressed.

That's not necessarily true, unless ISO mode does not try to remove user prohibitions. I recently tried switching from SmartRipper to DVDDecrypter (due to the popularity of DVDDecrypter around here) and I discovered that once in awhile my rips had forced subtitles. Lightning UK explained to me that I probably had "remove PU-Os" checked in the settings which caused the problem (as has been explained in the previous post), and he was right. I also assume that the forced subtitles mentioned by the original poster were caused by the same problem ripping with DVDShrink.
I also have found that the removal of RCE protection during the ripping process causes some problems as well, so I recommend that everyone rip with SmartRipper or DVDDecrypter with the options turned off if they want their rips to work like they should. Then remove user PU-OPs and region protection using IfoEdit. In over 800 rips that I have done, the combination of SmartRipper and IfoEdit has NEVER failed, not even once, while other solutions have produced problems like those that I just mentioned.

I only used DVD decrypter and DVD shrink.I don't have any problem so far.The last one i ripped with DVD decrypter in iso mode was PHONE
BOOTH.It was the same with original, i mean all the functions.IT also included FBI warning[can't forward FBI warning].I think nero 6
also can burn ISO files.
P.s. I don't know how to use ifo edit.
