When I play an .avi file encoded with xvid, my machine freezes up. I *do* have the codec installed, and my machine doesn't freeze from any other codec or any other reason.

I use "media player classic" "2k version" for windows 2000.

I have a 1500 AMD processor and 1GB RAM.

does anyone know why my machine freezes or how to help?

PS By "Freezes" I mean my machine locks up (won't respond to mouse or keyboard) BUT the sound still works. So I'll see and hear about 2 seconds of video, and then I can hear it, but yhen my computer doen't respond.

1. try another player

2.
1st deinstall the codec and any codec packs on your system
2nd run a registry cleaner
3rd reboot
4th install Xvid and the needed audio codec
(not from a codec pack, since some of them tend to make problems)
5th try to playback again

I wonder what decoder your using for playback? Very strange that it can make your computer lock up? maybe its the colorspace its using. Try installing ffdshow and have that as your decoder.

If you get really stuck, use AviC to change the FourCC code to DIVX/DX50 and then use DivX to playback the movie....
