Anyone have this?

It looks great...good price!

Newegg is an excellent online store.

Yep - thats my burner!

I paid nearly 100$ more for it here in Germany although it came with Nero and Sonics MyDVD.
I have no experience with other DVD burners but general experience leads me to say that it does everything it should on the burning side.
Extraction on the other hand is painfully slow and the recognition of a new disk takes ages too - still there is a new firmware due shortly.

Do other burners behave this way ?

P.S. Better look at the Specs on NEC site - this lot is all jumbled up DVD/CD Read Speeds 8-12x speed DVD-ROM reading; 17-40x speed CD-ROM reading capabilities
What does that mean?

My actual test with a clean DVD and DVDdecrypter started at 1.5 and finished at 3x.

My Pioneer A03 is painfully slow at reading dvd-rom's. So I picked up a cheap $45 Pioneer DVD-ROM drive that reads at 16X and it flies! I use it for reading and the burner for writing.

I also noticed it takes a while for my A03 to recognize a blank disk...kind of annoying. I think it takes around 20-30 seconds..hard to say I never timed it.

Hmm.. thanks for the comparrison,
so its quite normal behaviour.

I too use a standard DVD reader - LiteOn TD 163 -great!

Yes. Most, if not all, DVD burners are locked at 2x ripping speed. You're lucky to even be getting 3x at all.

As for the new firmware (version 1.06), here it is:

The new firmware supposedly solves the bad compatibility issues on generic/cheap medias.

NEC has removed the firmware 1.06 from their site with the message that it destroys the drives in certain circumstances. So we wait....

Not all - my HP DVD WRITER 200i (Ricoh 5125) can rip much faster (my max was 9,7x :)), but DMA has to be enabled!!

I´m not sure about this but I guess that drives are locked only to ripping with removing macrovision.

I stand corrected !
The computer doesn't allow me to operate this drive in DMA so I popped it in another one - here I can rip up to 6x speed.
(Still with the original firmware)

I have the nec drive and pioneer A05. the nec drive averages about 3.5 rip speed where as the A05 averages around 8x and goes as high as 12x on dvd5's. But the multi format is nice too.
