Hi, I'm using:
Koepi's 24062003-1
2pass
croma motion
motion search 6
h.263
VHQ 4
b frames (2,150,75,0)
croma optimizer
Trillis.
The problem is in the first few seconds on video and shows allot of macro blocks. it seams like the codec (1st pass) it not analysing the first few seconds / frames and therefore not giving the right allocation of bits (i could be totally wrong ;)). I'm using the latest ffdshow decoder and my hardware spec is below, this happens on my laptop and home computer so i don't think its decoding.
this build is very nice , i don't even mind this (bug?) my encodes are looking good for the size :D

I think it's the source which is causing these troubles.
I never run into such kind of a problem.

yes your probably right, i have tried it on a friends series and a few films, which all look the same but it is probably in my head :D being at the beginning my eyes are probably demanding crispness, and at the bit rate(s) i am encoding them at (for tests) this is not what my eyes are getting :)
great codec keep up the coding, i can't wait for xvid to get better and better!

Use ffdshow's OSD function to find out. Activate OSD and make it show current quantizer. If it starts with high values and drops later, you can blame xvid.

yes you are right, it starts off about 2,3 on the black before the first picture, then picks up to 23,24 then drops after the "macroblock" scene.
Friends episode:
Macroblock scene [23-24]
normal average [9-12]
goldmember:
Macroblock scene [10]
normal average [6]
pulp fiction:
macroblock scene [15]
normal average [5]
so is this ok? should i just carry on as i am?

please have a look at the 'credits' tab in the xvid configuration dialog and check if there is any thing entered int the 'credits at start of movie' section!

then please reinstall the codec AND hit load defaults then press ok, and then, try again.

I sometimes get similar problems :/ Usually not at the start, but somewhere in the middle.
I encoded my startwars ep2 once (for tests) and the scene when Yoda says "begun, the clone war has" was starting at quant 3, then kept 3-4 for two seconds, then increased to 10-12, kept that for two seconds, then decreased to 4 again.
Looked really weird with qpel active - there was no blocks because there was very little movement (just camera zooms slowly), but it was really bad.
Since then, I'm capping quantizers (usually 3-5). I can't recommend the same unless you really know what you're doing.
Radek
Try turning off anything on the debug tab (Chroma op and Trellis) and see what happens.
