I want to convert the captures of my DV camcorder to DivX so that I can burn them to CDs. I'm planning to store from 30 mins to 1 hour max to every CD. But do I have to resize the 720x576 PAL standard?And how would I calculate the proper bitrate and resize resolution, that would give the best result?I have some experience with Gordian Knot, and it would be the best if I could open the DV AVIs with it, but I can't (even if I convert it with Canopus DV Coverter).Any ideas?I was planning to convert it using VirtualDub. Should I deinterlace before resize? And is it free of "quality loss" to export the Adobe Premiere timeline to "Microsoft AVI using Canopus DV Codec DV BOOSTER Pack" or should I do else?
Lots of questions from a newbie, I 've gone across lots of forums, but I only get more confused. Which would be the best way to go from DV to DivX, and being able to handle the DV input firstly with Adobe Premiere?If anyone could clarify some things I would be grateful

It's been ages since i did DV to DIVX using Premiere, but here's what i found....

* Don't resize the video... it dramatically increases encoding time and you'll get dreadful artifacts due to the interlacing. If you must, so be it...

* you should easily fit 30-60mins footage per disc; presuming you also compress the audio.

* To calculate bitrates, download a bitrate calculator in the DOWNLOADS section. :rolleyes: Or if you can't do that, 3100kbit will fit 30mins on a 700MB CD and 1500kbit will fit about 60mins.

* If you export back to DV, you'll only fit ~3mins of DV footage per CD.

* To improve the quality of your DivX footage (because it will suffer quality loss), use the multipass feature when encoding... 2 passes is usually sufficient.

* I tried using a third-party DV codec and using VirtualDub too... it was a while ago, so many things have improved, but i had terrible trouble. :( Premiere is a good way to go if you've got it.

* With regards the de-interlacing, you should always do some tests yourself... but if you don't resize the video, you shouldn't need to deinterlace the footage.

hope this helps. You should do some more reading through this site. Now everyone else can repeat what bits i've typed even though i've already said it. :rolleyes:

might also be worth mentioning you try Dr.Divx... if you want something really simple, minimal technical knowledge required:

a proper resize will be:
720x576 -resize-> 786x576
or
720x576 -crop-> 704x576 -resize-> 768x576

If you want to encode DivX, you have to deinterlace, but this gives a massive Quality loss.

I recommend, using (X)SVCD or DVD and interlaced encoding. This will give you the best results.

There's a sticky thread with a guide in this forum.
