View Full Version : Poor results with Inverse Telecine

I have some downloaded DivX files of anime that were "improperly" encoded at 30fps instead of their native 24fps. I'd like to get them back to 24fps, but none of the Inverse Telecine settings I've tried in VirtualDub yield very good results (probably since the video was deinterlaced as well). Pans are smooth in the original, but become very choppy in the recompressed version. Any tips, or is it just impossible to get smooth results if the video was deinterlaced?

You said the original is smooth, so it has true 30fps! do not convert it to 24fps, no matter what you do you'll get choppy results.

Hi-
You said the original is smooth, so it has true 30fps!
I've seen a couple of those movies where some idiot just deinterlaced when he should have IVTC'd. If you're not real sure what you're looking for, they can seem pretty smooth. There's an easy way to find out, though. Open the .avi in Nandub/VDub/VDubMod and find a place where there's some action/movement. If it should have been IVTC'd, then in every sequence of 5 frames you'll see 3 clean frames followed by 2 blurry or ghosted frames. But unfortunately, if that's the case, there's nothing you can do to fix it. The fields are already gone.
So I'd suggest not downloading crap from the Internet, and learn here how to do it the right way.
And there is a chance, as Awatef said, that it should be kept at 30fps. And there's also a chance that it's a hybrid blend of 24fps and 30fps. If that's the case, just deinterlacing is one solution. It's the worst possible solution, in my opinion, but it will keep the 30fps portions smooth, even if the 24fps portions look like garbage.
