Most DLT and other high-speed tape drives are SCSI, so I'm going to assume yours is too. If that is the case, this sounds like a SCSI hardware/configuration problem.

Make sure of the following, in this order:

- Proper termination on the SCSI bus. Both ends of the chain must be terminated. If you only have the one device on the SCSI bus (the DLT drive), then the DLT drive must be terminated, and the host adapter must have it's termination switched to ON or AUTO. If you have a different SCSI bus configuration, post it here and I'll give specific instructions. Some devices are auto-terminating or have termination available with a DIP switch. If this is the case, make sure you don't double terminate by accidentally using the built-in termination AND an external terminator.

- Proper ID assignment on the SCSI bus. Every device on the bus must have a unique ID. The host adapter is usually ID 7, if you only have one device (the DLT drive) on the bus, set it to ID 3.

- Good SCSI cable that doesn't exceed distance limitations. Maximum cable length is determined by what SCSI standard/protocol will be used between the host adapter and the device. Single-ended Ultra Wide SCSI is the most limiting at 1.5 meters. LVD SCSI is forgiving, with maximum lengths up to 10 meters allowed.

- Upgrade the drivers for the host adapter card from the manufacturer's web site. i.e. for an Adaptec SCSI card, use an Adaptec driver. Do not use the built-in drivers in Windows, they may not support all functions of the host adapter.

- If you're writing to DLT with an older application that was written for WinNT, it may not be able to use the native Win2K/XP SPTI interface. Install Adaptec's ASPI layer, available on Adaptec's web site.

- Upgrade the firmware on the DLT drive (WARNING: Hazardous. Make sure you follow all of HP's instructions exactly or you will end up having to ship the drive back to HP. Also, make SURE your cables, termination, etc. are properly set up before you try this.)

- Upgrade the firmware on the SCSI host adapter, if available.

Let us know how this works.

when using DVDVirtuoso to write an image to tape, i get that error EVERY time, but after just clicking ok, the tape drive lights up to say 'tape ready to unload', but just leave it and start the write to tape again and it works fine.
