aac+ isnt really out for large parts of the public but there are already plans for a new release of vorbis (1.1) which should overtrump aac+ qualitywise in low bitrate scenarios :D

just a few quotes from the xiph homepage:

6 Upcoming Releases

6.2 Vorbis
Since Monty was absent, Jack relayed Monty's list of near-term goals that he will work on once the Neuros contract is completed. One is the oggfile API which will provide a vorbisfile-like API for multiplexing and demultiplexing Ogg files. Next up is a Vorbis 1.0.1 bugfix release, backporting some Tremor changes to the reference implementation, including the libogg2-zerocopy memory management, splitting decoding into its own library.

Finally, Monty is planning to make a Vorbis 1.1 AAC+SBR killer release. The exact plans are not known, but Vorbis 1.1 is going to include encoder tweaks to be more competitive in the low bitrate arena. There is also a possibility that some of Garf's high bitrate tuning will be incorporated.--- Log opened Sat Jul 05 19:45:17 2003
21:09 < jack> while i was in boston hanging with monty, we dicussed vorbis release stuff for a while
21:10 < jack> here's a fairly unordered list of the deliverables for the near term
21:10 < jack> vorbis 1.0.1 bugfix release (this is the end of summer stuff)
21:11 < jack> vorbis 1.1 AAC+SBR killer release
21:11 < volsung> And incompatible with 1.0, I assume.
21:11 < jack> no
21:11 < jack> 1.1 is fully compatible. just a new encoder :)
21:11 < purple> How are we going to kill AAC+SBR?
21:12 < jack> monty has some ideas
21:12 < brendan> whatever happened to peeling btw?
21:12 < jack> he was testing aac+sbr files while i was in boston
21:12 < jack> and said they were good, but not so good we couldn't beat it in the current bitstream :)
21:12 < jack> brendan: i'm not sure. i'll ask monty once he's done with the current contract work
21:12 < jack> segher (in the absence of monty) seems to be the peeling expert.
21:13 < jack> aac+sbr just came out.
21:13 < jack> it's called something weird
21:13 < jack> like Ultra Low AAC
21:14 < purple> Is Vorbis 1.1 going into low bitrates only, or high bitrates, too, to 'convert' MPC fans?
21:14 < jack> purple: dunno. the primary goal is to improve onthe low side afaik.
21:14 < jack> we'll see what monty actually does.
21:15 < jack> knowing how perfectionist he is, i'd be surprised if it didn't improve across the board :)
21:15 < purple> And/or incorporate some of Garf's tuning.
21:15 < jack> incorporating garf's tuning is also on his agenda i know
21:16 < volsung> purple: At least at low bitrates it is easier to tell if you've improved something.great to hear that vorbis development didnt stop and that vorbis will be tuned much more for lower bitrates (which was always said that there is still much room for improvements)

more infos are welcome :)

Not really info, but Vorbis critique:

I guess the vorbis dev is targeting for too high goals without even fixing the most obvious problems in vorbis 1.0 first.

Like we were taught in elementary school...

If they do follow through on all this, I'd be one happy camper.
