I'm a novice here.I'm a little interested in media editing. This days I tried to compress VBR MP3 with lame. And I have some questions about lame. The following questions is displayed:
1.lame -q 0 -v 0 -b 96 -B 320 input file output file
This sytax is wrong!I find we can't use the parameter(-q 0 -v 0)at the same time.But the parameter(-q 0 -v)is OK!
That is to say,we can't use the parameter(-q 0 -v 0)at the same time.
Isn't it right?Or I can use them at the same time? Please tell me.
2.What's the different between parameter(-v -b 96 -B 320) and parameter( -v)?
If I used parameter(-v -b 96 -B 320),all bitrates blow 96KBITS would be encoded with 96KBITS?
In my opinion,I want to know the difference between -b and -B.
If I set one parameter like -b n,all bitrates blow n will be encoded with nKBITS?
If I set one parameter like -B n,all bitrates above n will be encoded with nKBITS?Please tell me.
3.I found the key parameter related to the working time is n of -q and -v.
One time I used -h(-q 2) -v(the default value is 4) to encode MP3,it took me 5 minutes to finished the job.
Another time I used -q 0 -v to encode MP3,it took me 8 minutes to finshed the job.
Could you tell me the advised value n for -q and -v?(Use less time and gain high quality)
My aim to ask the question is to know the best value to control quality and working time. Please give me some advice;)And you can offer me some sentence about encoding MP3 with lame.
4.This days I usually use CDEX1.5 to encoding MP3 from CD,and I also try lame to encode MP3.Could I use lame to encode MP3 from CD?Or you could recommand me some good software in encoding MP3?
5.When encoding MP3,I found some symbol like % and *.What do they mean?I thought they were related to the quality of the object. For example,% means 70% quality of the source file,* means 90% quality of the source file.Isn't it right? Please tell me something about the symbol like % and *.
BEST REGARDS

Dear Moderator,I've checked the audio FAQ .But no available parameters for VBR-MP3 is found. In the FAQ,I also found recommanded setting for ABR-MP3 and CBR-MP3.But I also want to encode CD to VBR-MP3.Could you please answer my questions more detailed?Especially question 5!In my opinion,% means the volume is reduced while * means the volume is exactly equal to the source file.Isn't it right?I also need your acknowledge. Please tell me.

http://hydrogenaudio.org/ is "the" place to find answers to most of your questions concerning lame.

hydrogenaudio is right, as the links in the FAQ suggest

As for your other questions, they seem to be problems with setting up CDEX and not really audio encoding related at all. Read the CDEX webpage and manuals and I'm sure you will figure out what you're doing wrong.

So, in short: Questions 1,2,3: check the list of recommended LAME settings.

Questions 4,5: read up on your CDEX manual or try another ripper such as EAC and read it's manual if you don't understand the setup initially. I wish I could sit down and show you just how to set up these programs, but really me typing an explaination is going to be just as good(probably worse) as you reading the manuals.

Read the help that comes with lame, all the parameters and switches are explained there. Differences between -b and -B is that first is lower bitrate and B is maximum bitrate in a VBR encode. Quality setting (q)is a matter of taste, personally i think q1 is more than suffisent, q0 uses a little higher bitrates but does not gain much in quality (but again, to my ears). I personally recommend you to use built-in presets: -fast standard (faster, new algorithm) or -standard (old algorithm) are supposed to be transparent vbr encoding.

If you want to try your own settings to encode audio CD , just may want to try this: joint stereo, b32 and B320, vbr new, q1, other settings default.

Hope it helps

In 99% of all cases the "--alt-preset" settings are everything you need.

Thanks a lot.I've tested razorlame. It's also one good GUI for lame just like CDEX.In fact, most detailed settings are included in CDEX options.
Please pay attention to the symbol when encoding mp3 with lame command line.I want to know the meaning for these symbol.I wonder if someone could tell me.
