Ok... i've spent almost the last 24 hours mucking around with the following stuff (2 systems)

System 1
Athlon 2100+
KT400 mobo
512mb PC3200 XMS
Gainward Ti4600 VIVO
WD800JB

System 2
Pentium 4 2.4C @ 3.0ghz
i875 Gigabyte 8KNXP
512mb PC3500 XMS
Gainward Ti4600 VIVO
2x IBM 60GXP 40gb in Raid0 on ITE Raid Controller

Both box's are using Windows XP professional SP1a.
Both are using WDM Capture drivers 1.11
One is using 44.03 Det's (P4) the other 28.32 Det's (Athlon)

Now here we go.

We're trying to rip PAL VHS(longplay, i know quality sucks but thats what he has.) into the machine. Compress it using Huffyuv 2.2.1 (i THINK - whatever comes with the latest v/dub/g.knot/dvd2svcd) and prep it for VCD making.

Both Machines drive speed is well over the 15mb/sec we needed (@ 640x480), and both machines use SFA cpu usage. Yet framerate seems to lock itself at 16.66667 and bounce around there, causing massive frame rate drops.

We heard there was a problem with Gainward cards in particular (which we've solved btw.. to get around the code 10 error you can't have the vivo cable plugged in when you install the driver.. its fine afterwards, usually needs to be updated after a reboot though.) and Gainward say to use Nvidia WDM 1.11 and 28.32 Det's. So after much scouring (www.guru3d.com) we get these files.

After trying for about 12 hours on the athlon, we pulled the card out and put it into my p4 box. CPU and drivespeed is now NOT a factor. After much mucking around and getting the 16.66667 fps thing... i somehow managed to get it into 25.0000 fps stable, even ripped a 23gb file (96'000 odd frames, only 112 dropped, but i was using the machine at the time.) however we also had it working in the athlon at one stage, but not again.

We've tryed Vdub VCR/sync, VDub 1.5.4, VDubMod 1.5.1.1a and premiere 6.5. Still no go.. always 16.666667 fps. Now i know its a setting or a driver thing or something as i have HAD 25.0000 fps on both machines. Just cursing that VDub doesn't save ALL the settings... Any Idea's, experiences or anything?

Spec is fine for both.

I'll Blame WindowsXP, it sux, especially when SP4 for W2k just arrived. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a copy m8.

That is quite weird, there would be no way of finding out what is doing it. Have you tried removing all dub settings and starting over, or even a different program like VirtualVCR?

Ok.. firstly, windows xp does not suck. If i wanted an answer like that i wouldnt have asked..

Windows XP does everything windows 2000 does, only with more compatibility, and i have tried MANY MANY THINGS with it, incl. 3dsmax, photoshop, heavy DB work, alot of dvd backups (Svcd and divx).

All programs show this error, including Adobe Premiere 6.5 (like that wasn't to be expected...)

OK, here we go,

first I have to admit, that you (NSanity) should be a bit more friendly, since dar1us wanted to help you and please dont post threads here like "anyone?". Refer to the forum rules if you like to know more !

Your problem:
Where do you live ? PAL Country ? Tapes recorded with PAL ? Then please refer to Full PAL (7xx * 576) or if you dont have so much disk space... to 1/4 PAL (384 * 288) or directly VCD resolution (352 * 288) There is no sense in a resolution like 640 * 480 (Deinterlacing problems...).

Did you try a tape that is not recorded longplay ? Maybe longplay has such a stupid framerate (dont know). And then you should capture with ~16...fps

Good luck

I found that iuvcr was far better for capping than *dub.

I haven't tried iuvcr yet... but virtual vcr works like a charm with my tv tuner card.

I can't get vdub to work properly with my tuner card, but I have successfully captured video using the video input on my video card and virtualdub.
