I tried extracting the audio from a divx using Nandub, and got a wav file- looks like a riff wav file, from the size of it.. tried opening that in Sound Forge, it came up as an empty file. I tried renaming it to .mp3, that had the same effect. The file plays fine in a media player... just won't open for editing. How to I actually get to edit the file?

Install GSpot (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Editing/gspot22.zip) to examine the .avi file, to determine the audio track codec. You can either use Nandub or VirtualDubMod (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Editing/VirtualDubMod_1_5_1_1a_all_inclusive.zip) to extract the audio track. I prefer the latter, since it can extract multiple tracks and avoid adding a WAV header.

the audio is 128kbps 1x vbr mp3.
like i said, i've already extracted it.. but i'd like to do so in a way that i can edit it. what is it about the audio track i've already extracted that Sound Forge doesn't like?

I don't know Sound Forge, but VBR MP3 is non-standard. Try converting it to WAV with BeSweet or a different tool, if Sound Forge has trouble with it.
