View Full Version : How appropriate is ReplayGain for films? Even with DRC?

So most people use peak normalization, which finds the highest peak and normalizes based on that number. ReplayGain [specs (http://replaygain.hydrogenaudio.org)] is based on the average volume. This was designed for songs and might be inappropriate for films because the loudness disparity between dialog and gunshots is pretty huge. I did a search and saw the DSPguru said he didn't feel that ReplayGain wasn't relevant to films, but he didn't really go into his reasons.

Another thing to consider is Dynamic Range Compression. If this is turned on and the loudness disparity is thereby decreased, would this make ReplayGain useful then?
