I have an mpeg file for a VCD I wish to encode into mpeg-4. Problem is something in the file's header is FUBAR. Although it plays nicely till the end, the file's play time is displayed as twelve minutes shorter than the real thing, so I can't open it in VDub (well, I can, but I can't get past the location where it thinks the file ends).

How can I still open it fully, or alternatively, how can I fix the file?

You can demux your file and load video and audio streams sepatately.

If demuxing tools refuse to process your mpeg, give vcdcutter a try - it is able to process files even if they are damaged. Instead of demuxing, you might want to open it in vcdcutter, mark the entire file for cutting and output to a new file.
