I bought a dvd-r/-rw/+r/+rw burner last week. Wanted to copy dvds like everyone else here. Had some questions I needed answered cause I couldnt figure out what I was doing wrong. Yet I couldnt post anything because I was a new member and had to wait 5 days. Out of all the other message boards that I have ever signed up for this was the first time I had to wait more then a few minutes to make my first post.
Why do new people to the dvd scene have to wait 5 days to make their first post? I found this to be very annoying as I couldnt ask question on these message boards, and had to go to other sites for help.

It forces you to look around, read a lot and search for the answers by yourself. If we don't do this, most people won't search, but ask directly. They ask questions which have been answered million times before, which implies that this measure reduces the amount of useless posts significantly. This may or may not hold in your case, but it holds for most people. That's why this measure was introduced.

Very understandable. But 5 days? someone could easily read all the tutorials and guides on this site in just a few hours, and look threw the message boards posts in the same amount of time. Just think 5 days was a bit to much. Other then that its a very informative site.

When the policy was first introduced here, if I recall correctly, the wait was 3 days, and we didn't get enough reduction in questions already answered in FAQs. When the extension was increased, the posting rate of obviously-already-answered-questions dropped dramatically.

Not only does this force you to attempt to learn the search engine, but it eliminates or reduces what I call the one hit wonders. These are the people that have no intention at all of adding or truly joining this community and these type of people are welcome to search and use our knowledge passively all they want, but I would rather they go elsewhere to ask the lazy questions.
I would bet that over 75% of the questions asked by first time posters have already been answered in some manner. The most diligant of the newer people have decided not to sit and wait for the 5 days to expire, but are actively seeking answers from previous posts and maybe learning a few things they never thought of.
The wealth of knowledge here is amazing, but it is also cluttered with many duplicate and useless posts.
If when you post here you keep in mind that unlike many forums the rules are actually enforced here to the letter then you will enjoy your stay.
A hint the biggest pet peave of most members is is not using the search engine and the biggest offenses from the Mods perspective are rules 4 and 6 (check the forum rules for what those are).
I guess to sum it up I would say this place has much to offer the people that are willing to take the time to soak it in and act in a reasonable manner.
Enjoy your stay and welcome,
Mark
