hi. i have winxp and have 2 harddrives. my main windows files are on c: and my "documents and settings" folder is on D:, along with the pagefile.

when i defrag my harddisks, i get a green section on both hd's. can anyone tell me why? are documents and settings sytem files?? or is it the pagefile?

another thing, when i defrage one of them, there's a big blue strip on the right, and the rest on the left.

i'm guessing that those files can't be moved becuase theyre in use, but is there any way of running defragmenter before windows starts so it moves all the files to the beginning of the hard drive?

Well, if you are using NTFS file systems, the GREEN chunks are the necessary for the file system. Windows needs those green chunks to know where all of your files are on the drive. The blue chunk way out is most likely the swap file. The swap file is placed towards the end of the drive so that it has the space it needs to swap files on a consecutive chunk of the drive. The swap file is meant to increase the speed of the computer, so putting it in with the rest of the files would slow it down.

the swap file was moved by myself to the other harddrive so it can't be that.

O&O Defrag (http://www.oosoft.de/en/products/oodefragv4/index.html) can do that.
Boot-time defragmentation of any given file including Paging file, Registry, Master File Table (MFT) on NTFS and any other file, which is locked during runtime, e.g. Exchange or SQL databases, can be specified by the user
I've been using O&O Defrag and I was very happy with it. It also has other nice features.
Have a look at it.
