Hi

There will be soon a new comparision. Here the link.

without actually having performed those tests I have an idea how the results might look like:
1) RV9
2) WMV9
3) DivX5
4) XviD

Based on my previous knowledge of the codecs to be tested one can say the following: RV9 is the most streaming aware and optimized codec. It clearly was designed for that purpose and as DSL connections are overall still in the 512kbit/s area, RV9 is optimized for low bitrates. Furthermore, its tendency to smoothe out details in higher bitrate scenes (see my previous codec comparisons) will come in very handy at 350kbit/s
WMV9 covers a more broad specttrum but also has some streaming (thus low bitrate ) optimizations. Therefore, WMV9 will use its smoothing tendencies to yield a reasonable picture at 350kbit/s.
Both DivX5 and XViD are not really optimized for 4h/CD bitrates, thus they will not stand a chance against RV9. Based on my observations about smoothing tendencies I would expect DivX5 to perform slightly better - XviD's animation mode might make a difference in this scenario though but builds using that mode are not widely used. Also, it is known that XviD has been optimized for bitrates in regions conforming with the TDX rules.. meaning you place about 2h of videos per CD or less.

In any case, I expect RV9 to win this comaprison because it's the codec that's most suited for the test scenario.

In sharpness area, XviD beats on some scene WMV9. XviD also beats DIVX in image clarity.

IMO, it yould be like this:

1) RV9
2) WMV9 / XviD
3) DIVX

Anyway, the comparison frame by frame hasn't started yet, so this order may change.

are you sure it's worth your time to compare the frames? If I understand correctly you plan to program a flash to allow people to switch between images to spot the difference (if you do, you gotta give me that for my next comparison ;)) - why not leave it up the readers in the first place? After all, comparing frames doesn't tell you nearly as much as watching the video.

We'll get anime's vob and restart the comparison. Some people don't like my source. Ramirez developped a flash software to switch between PNG compressed screenshots, with comments. I'll post the clips (like I did) and the frame by frame comparison. I may also increase the bitrate, because looks like I'm the only one interrested in low-bitrate encodes (read: 250 - 450kbbs)... but I need to talk with Ramirez about this.

The vob I'm seeking is the opening of Cowboy Bebop, I should have it soon.

If you want the source for the flash soft, ask ramirez :D

I have the Capt. Bebop trailer but I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for. I'm really not an anime guy, if it weren't for me actually liking Futurama, no animation source would've made it into my own codec comparisons.

Comparison closed. See the page 3 for more informations.
