As you probably know, H264 is progressively implemented. I don't really know when the first encoders will be available, but this new format have interresting features.
H264 is mainly designed for PDA with wireless adapter. This will allow video broadcasting over intranet networks using uPnP (Universal plug and play)technology, backup of video on PDA... The H264 is build around low bitrates to maintain a good quality of service on all network infrastructures.
But H264 will be also able to handle high resolution video (DVD, HDTV), and it seems that the quality gain is more than 20%. Encoding time will be also longer due to new encoding algorithms.

H264 is a standart and will probably make its own little "revolution" in video encoding world ;)

there's actually quite a bit of ongoing discussion about h264 in the new a/v formats forum, where this thread would also belong!

uhhh use on pda??? It's hard enough encoding with h.264 on a p4 3ghz. Though i guess progress on optimization side could be made, but i highly doubt pda adoptability (yes, its a word) will occur anytime soon. I'd much rather see h.264 be implemented in games (ie kick ass Final Fantasy cut scenes) and in webcam live feeds and so forth.
