I see so many boring menus and menu-animations. You really see there, that for these people time was money. But there are also some nice exceptions where the producers spent some time in it. For example the menus of "American Psycho" are one of my favorite. But what do you think are the best, which ones are recommendable to see?

the menus in minority report are interesting, and pretty well fitted to the movie too.

of the discs i have made at work, almost all of them run off the same template, but there was one where i found the almost perfect background image for it, and it looks very nice, altho still.

Yeah? What about adding it as an attachment, I'm interested how it looks..? I think if you're a pro in AfterEffects for example one could make some very cool menus. I bought two books about that prog but unfortunately didn't have the time to "go deeper", yet.

The faster, the better. It also should not spoil anything from the movie itself. And I'm not really a fan of sound in menu's either. :o

it was a disc the company authored for another company, not one we authored and sell, so ill get back to you on that ;)

your artistic talent is going to be a limiting factor anyway, which is why we have an 'art department' to help out ;)

the speed should also depend on the music chosen for the menus, and the type of movie it is.

for a movie like fast and the furious, fast transitions between menus are a given, on the other hand the LOTR SEE menus have a slow(ish) transition between menus which is very fitting.

for sound in menus, its very easy to do badly, and is really good when is done well. i think the LOTR SEE menu audios are quite good.

I can't tell you which is best, "Amores Perros" is a fast but cool one, but I can tell you which is bigest:
"Delicatessen" menus come at about 1GB. Nice too.

the movie i'm currently backing up has a very nice menu that fits very very well. It's "the fabulous world of Amelie Pulain". they also sum up to 930 megs of course :) thanks to ammck55 for notifiying me of this typo. It's over all a great disk to show what can be done without many fancy extras. The disk is filled up with the main movie containing 2 angles (french and german version, which differ on about 10 spots throughout the movie) 2x 5.1 ac3 2x 5.1 DTS and a commentary track. as extras there's only 700 megs of trailers.

some other nice menus are the ones of Pearl Harbor Directors Cut

One that comes to mind is U2 - Best of 1990-2000 DVD.
One of the better ones.

I dont see any flex menus in the Minirity REport DVD when i play it WinDVD, just plain selecting of subs and audio and chapters i dont understand... Maybe its only showing them in a standalone DVDplayer.

When i open the movie with DVDshrink, you can see some extra movie in undefined title.. strange. I have also heared from other people that there must be a complex menu with this film playing in the back...

What is this?

The new Lion King menu has a really annoyingly long intro before the menu appears. You can skip it but it's still annoying. Plus the typical set of trailers when you first insert the DVD. Long gone are the days when Disney special editions went straight to the menu. Now they just use the standard DVD release even on collector editions.

One of the most memorable menus is from Van Wilder. Basically, it's a video of a cute (busty) chick in tight Tee Shirt just standing, bopping to the music. The Menu options are printed on the tee and when you select another menu page she takes off her shirt and puts on one with you new options. By default a little black bar pops up when she changes shirts (well not too little, this girl is blessed ;)), but you can turn that off.

Maybe not the most fancy or technical, but I thought it was pretty clever and it definitely fits the tone of the movie.

@wmansir

Yeap...I can confirm the girl is blessed.
This link (http://www.lightsoutentertainment.com/dvd/eggs/eggs.php?dvd=370) might interest you then ;)

If you got the NTSC version, why not have the uncensored version automatically turned on all the time upon DVD insert. http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=42415

As for menus, have anyone of you seen Boat Trip's menus? That puts Van Wilder unrated to shame.

The non-SE R1 release of Memento was very cool. Without blowing the movie, basically the guy has no long term memory so he forgets where he is and what he's doing every so many minutes. As you are navigating the menu's things disappear, move around, etc...
Play will be top in the list the first time you go to the menu, and will be 3rd on the list the next time. It messes with you and really captures the feel of the movie in a very simple way.

My all time least favorite menus were on the Planet of the Apes remake. Its an ape holding a weapon and when you move to a new button he does a little dance and points his weapon there instead. It takes a few secs to go from one button to another, and some buttons cannot be reached without going through other buttons first. It forces you to watch all this stupid animation every time and it gets very old very fast.

Another one of my pet peeves is when they show a montage of the movie before fading into the main menu. If I wanted to see a preview of the movie I would watch the trailer.

That is the best menu i have ever seen, not only is it well thought out, and over 1 gig in size, but it has easter eggs also with behind the scenes footage of the making of the menu. Its like a mini-movie, and i was really impressed by it.
