Subtitle Colors and Subtitle Background playback problems

I extracted the subtitle from an anime episode with ogmdemuxer
I changed the bitrate to 25fps with subtitletool, and saved it as an ssa file
Then I opened the ssa file with MaestroSBT, and configured it, following the guide mentioned at http://www.how-to-convert.com/ask_us/a7042003.htm.

I took white for the text color and Black for the outline.
Still no problems, but after processing it and burning it to a dvd, the subs showed up black, with grey outline

Also they were placed on a big black bar, which was intransparent

I read a lot of threads about subtitle probs, but none gave me a satisfying answer.


Can someone help me out please ?

I guess that you are using DVD Maestro to author the DVD, because you're using .son subs. I don't know exactly for Maestro, but in Scenarist you can set the colors that will be displayed in the final DVD. So for example: your black lines turn grey and your white lines turn out black...

I'm just guessing here, but if any Maestro-user can confirm or correct this, I think we almost helped Icepick out.

usually when you rip subs from a disc, it will save a .son and a .spl (i may have the extension wrong) which is a maestro colour palette file.

Just to be on the safe side: I change the ssa files with subtitletool to son, and I edit them using MAestroSBT, creating a son file. I would like to end up with a transparent background, and plain white letters (if not otherwise possible with a small black outline)

But, I have your answer, if u haven't figured it out yet :)

doucle click on a sub
Click to color tab

Your color statement says Color (0 1 0 0).

This means that ...
Red color in subs uses color 0 (1st color) in color swatch.
Black color uses color 1 (2nd color) in color swatch.
Blue uses color 0 (1st color) in color swatch and
white uses again color 0 (1st color) in color swatch.

we want all of them but the text and its stroke to be transparent so we have to edit the contrast statement to (15 15 0 0). Again 1st value goes for red etc as above.

Now click Edit Pallete. Click color 0, this is the 1st color top left and type 255 255 255 in the rgb value to make it white.

Click the 2nd color, the one right next of the 1st. Make it black, will be the text stroke. Give the 0 0 0 rgb values to make it black.

Now the color pallette corresponds to the son file. U can import the subs and everything should be OK.
