hi. i've decided to finally format my pc and start from scratch again, hoping it will speed my pc up and sort some things out.
at the moment, all my divx playback codecs are messy due to a certain package i installed foolishly (NIMO).
i'd like to know what you lot think i should install to have the most stable setup with the fewest problems possible. i'd like to be able to play divx3/4/5, and xvid. if there are any other formats i've forgotten that i may need please mention them so i don't forget.
any help is very much appreciated. thanks.,

For playback, use ffdshow. It covers all of those codecs.

what just one codec????
you say "for playback", i will also be converting to and from divx and maybe xvid. i didn't mention it before becuas ei thought if the pc can play it, then it can read it whcih means it can do anything with it.
btw, what happenned to having to install a divx 3 codec and a seperate divx5 codec?? and then an xvid codec. things have changed eh.

ffdshow is a "__dec" rather than a codec, as it is a DirectShow decoding-only tool. I recommended it because it supports pretty much every MPEG-4 variant around, such as XviD, all DivX releases, Microsoft's MPEG-4 versions, H.263, and others.
But you've just changed the rules, as you've now stated you plan on transcoding.
You'll need the destination codec, and, unless you use AviSynth to frameserve via DirectShowSource and ffdshow, you'll need the source codecs as well.
EDIT:
And, I doubt you'd like the looks of the result. Transcoding from one lossy video codec to another at typical low bitrates can look pretty awful.

is a codec needed for vcd?

No. At least, you don't need to install a separate codec.

i've formatted the pc now and have install FFDSHOW (2003-05-23). i played two avi's that i have and both of them are grey. at the beginning when the universal logo appears, it's very light grey compared to the borders. i'm guessing it's ffdshow's fault becuase it didn't do this with nimo codec pack.
i've looked at the configurations of ffdshow but didn't understand any of it.
it's very wierd though. i was just trying to make an image of the movie (using printscreen) to upload it and show you what i'm talking about, but when i pasted it into photoshop, there was no grey, just a slightly lighter black which is normal.
why is this happening??

i have just tried an old ffdshow because the one i was using was alpha but the same thing happens.
shoiuld i just download the Gorkdian KNot rip pack and install only the codecs i need?
or should i just install each codec seperately? if so, where's the xvid codec on the download page?
